A to Z

give me a letter
twisted and beautiful
like butterfly wings
to fly to some magic lands.

give me a word
sharp as a razor blade
to cut them off
and fall like blooded rain.

give me a number
triple six and wine
to hide and reborn
ashes to sky.

give me an apostrophe
from A to Z
beginning to end,
to finish this poem.

The Author

Dedication:

To every Genevese

and to every other

human being who,

in oneness, symbolize

that Genevan spirit

of tolerance, peace,

humanitarianism and

brotherhood of all

humankind.

Prologue

"Man is born free;

and everywhere he

is in chains."

~ Jean Jacques Rousseau

"The desire to be as

civil as possible is

a deep motive for the

contemplative life."

~M. Scott Peck

In Geneva today, the human creative spirit is

not in chains. One is invited to let one's creative

essence run calmly wild for the peaceful good of all

humanity.

In contemplation therefore, Geneva will never cease

to awe and inspire  my deepest poetic emotion. For

me, Geneva is not just a small, global city and state.

Geneva is an emerald beauty of huge, natural, creative

inspiration so unexplainable.

In paying this homage to Geneva, it is my kind wish to

invoke the most subtle feeling in every human heart -

so that we can begin to see Geneva anew based on her

ancestral heritage in the reformation and humanitarianism.

And also in the moving spirit of her hard-won independence

clothed in that strengthening solidarity of the human spirit.

In Geneva's great name, let us continue to live with that

cherished spirit of peace warmed in the sky-blue garments

of love and solidified in the flame of human adversity

and soulful yearning for survival through this journey

called life.

At the very dawn of the new millennium, let us embrace

one another with that sweet fragrance of humane care

and healing oneness.

In Geneva's meadow gardens and green country-sides

of inspiration and peace, :- from Hermance to Dardagny;

from Veyrier to Versoix, to Plan-les-Ouates - where

inspiring Patek Philippe have been humanely creating

worthy watches for humankind since 1839, let us, indeed,

affirm our love for one another despite our skin colour,

religious creed, social status, level of education or ethnic

origin:

By doing so, we will surely build an enchanting world of

peace and humaneness where everyone will sit with joy

and fulfilment under his or her own Alpine tree

or palm tree.

Subsequently, let me specially call on all women and

men of inspiration and goodwill to join me in paying

this heart-felt homage to Geneva - with additional

inspiration and encouragement from abiding friends

such as Franck Muller: Master of Complications!

Let my creative tribute to this humanely great Canton of

the Swiss, Confederation Helvetia, which I have come to

christen: Poetic Geneva, outlive the monuments of time

and stone. Let us cherish this humble homage to Geneva

now and forever!

Geneva, Switzerland

i:

Escalade

There is a spirit so strong

and beautiful on this land

called Geneva where the

rivers Rhone and Arve

calmly flow.

On a summer boatride down

the Rhone town and country,

one's joy is aroused by the

enchanting nature of Geneva's

bloom and glow.

Geneva is a beautiful land

beckoning to love and to

embrace with a maidens's

charm.

The people of Geneva are

beautiful too. It is the

people's strong spirit

that sustains the land in

beauty an peaceful

independence.

This strong spirit came

on firmly during that

dark night of December

11, 1602, when it seemed

the stars of hope and

light had fled from

Geneva's sky.

When it seemed the people

of Geneva will smile no

more in the land's beauty.

With Charles-Emmanuel -

Duke of Savoy on the brink

of conquering Geneva by

suprise, the land's peaceful

soul was shaken.

From the city walls at

Plainpalais to the

clinging bells of Saint

Peter's Cathedral, the

Genevese raised their

loving lanterns in

oneness.

Jacques Mrcier's first

shot of warning can

still be heard today,

raising that strong

spirit for the land's

fragrant, uplifting

freedom.

Even Francois Bousezel

who gave his life to

keep Geneva's peaceful

independence and beauty

will still be remembered

till the end of time.

In a spirit of oneness

and love, Geneva fought

to bring glorious light

and freedom during that

night of terror.

Through the years, that

sweet aroma of Mere

Royaume's pot of saving

soup can still be breathed

in soothing defence of

Geneva's independence.

Lady Piaget's keys

unlocked the darling

door to freedom and

joyful victory.

Geneva won her freedom,

her peaceful independence

when Isaac Mercier dropped

the Portcullis at the

blown-up gate of Porte

Neuve.

The stars smiled.

Heaven heathered.

The dark grey sky

bloomed into dewy

dawn on that glorious

sunday morning when

Theodore de Beze and

Simone Goulart led

Geneva in worship

and praise to God

Almighty who made

all things peaceful

and beautifully

healing.

Remember, there is

a strong spirit so

splendid and uplifting

on this land of heaven's

earth called Geneva where

the rivers Rhone and Arve

freshly flow with gladness.

There is a spirit so

strong and beautifully

inspiring on this

Genevese land called

Saint Gervais where

eighteen men lie

while the freedom

and peaceful

independence

they won live

for you and

for me till

the end of

time!

A very nice tribute to Geneva.  I've learned a lot on an historical perspective.  Great work. ^_^

Ugonna,

What a wonderful homage to a beautiful city. My husband and I have visited Geneva and found it to be a lovely, ethereal place whose citizens are friendly and welcoming.  I enjoyed the historical citations in your "Homage to Geneva."  A beautiful piece!

Best regards,

I was in Geneva last month and I can totally relate to the sentiments that you have expressed so beautifully here..Ugonna. Its a most wonderful and humane city...and you have brought that aspect of the city so well in your poem. Its as if Geneva is speaking to you and through the words of Geneva you speak to us. One of my most memorable memories of Geneva is from the air as the plane swoops in to land ..with the calmness of the lake beckoning you to come down quickly. I will surely be back again in Geneva soon and I will surely be back before that to read your wonderful words. Thank you Ugonna.

Be My Date

Ugonna Wachuku

Smile your smile.
Be your real self.
Dream your dream.

Do your kind thing.
If you wish, get angry.
Let-off steam. But don't
heap it on me. You can
let the pigs at Decapolis
have it. I wouldn't mind.
But wait, people could
mind.

Anyway, life goes on.
Just don't let it go on

as usual. Do something
different. Build new dreams.
Plant roses and its thorns.
Be good to somebody. There
are so many hurting souls
out there.

View sprawling landscapes.
Watch eagles and me soar.
Smell the luring earth.
Till the soil. Plant new
crops. Watch them grow.
Eat no junk food. Care
for your life and body.
Don't mind the cat story.
You aint got nine lives.

Do something different,
my dear. Listen to the
whistling pine. Hear
the waterfall draw patterns
and streams throught the
forest. Admire the dolpins.

Cherish and uphold heaven's
love for humanity. Reach
beyond the stars. Let God's
breath lead you on. Just be
willing and available.

Climb unbending mountains and
hills. View the valley. Have
hope. Build love. Just love
those little children. Show
them the good, loving way.
Stop hatred and racism.

Build mansions of peace and
brotherhood over terrorism.
Do something different,
beautiful one. Just do
something different, humanity.

Listen to my heartbeat in
its loving rhythm. Be my love.
If you will. Just be my date,
beautiful one. Kingdom one.
Smiling faces and beating
hearts are waiting:

Just be
my date
And

Silence

Ugonna Wachuku

There's grave silence

accross the earth seen.

Hidden hearts preach in

cities for growth, for

social justice, for

dying humankind's

well-being globally,

for fertile farmlands

and humane harvest.

Inequality blooms!

Silence! You don't

count!

Church bells are silently

ringing at the distance.

Temple bells are also

ringing. And Mosque

calls mingle with these

ringing bells alive.

I can hear the women
and men singing. I hear

humankind singing:
I can hear you from
Essertines. I can hear

you from Nigeria!

I can hear you from

Mexico! I can hear

you from these United

Yet, you are so far
away. But I am still

human unloved!

But with the clustered
brilliance of your waving
hair, you will come in
silence.

At the warmth of the
evening sun, you will
smile in silence. I too
will watch in silence.

Night shall come with
golden lamps to give
you hope and unforgotten
love with cherishment;
to give you the silence
of yearning hearts walking
the lush landscape of my
beckoning soul:

That loving mutness in
sweet sad silence seen

across our breathing

blue earth!

There's grave silence

Hidden hearts preach in

cities for growth, for

resilience, for soothing

social justice, for fresh

for dying humankind's

well-being, globally!

Sing me a Song

Ugonna Wachuku

That the moon may shine;
that the stars may bloom;

that flowers may blossom;
that birds may sing:

Sing me a song.
Sing me a song from
the depths of the sea.

Sing me a song from
the love in your heart.

Sing me a song from
the beauty that is you.
Let me feel the beat
of your heart at noon
when the sun is high
on the horizon.

Let me be near you
and in you for the
love that we share;
for the care you
uphold.

Let me not depart
from your presence.

Let the smiling stars
be there to welcome us
at the beginning -
from lush, inspiring
landscapes and meadow
sea shores.

Let humanity learn
from the love within
our love. Let angellic
hands play this music
of the bountiful soul
from generation to
generation.

Just sing me a song.
And let me be who
I am because I too
will sing you a song
from my deep soul;
and let you be who
you are!

Make Me Whole

Ugonna Wachuku

The day drags on slowly.
But there are gardens and
flowers to be planted.

There are seeds to be
sown for the harvest.
There are shadows and
dreams to be seen.

There are tears to be
shed; and smiles to be
given on the threshold
of a new beginning.

In my soul;
in the deeper me;
far from the world
and heart that you
know in me, lies that
yawning yearning to
live; to drink from
your life-giving well.

With tears and pleas;
with a broken heart and
shattered dreams, I state
my pain. I shed tears.

I share my dreams
with you; my longings.
I bring my broken pieces
to you; the Potter's
Hands.

When, at last, I find
my narrow way to that
eternal abode of your
loving grace, I will
fall flat; and my only
plea will be that you
make me whole.

Awakening

Ugonna Wachuku

Nothing else but you moves
my soul through life and
clouds of beauty and joy.

When the story of my life
is told, let your hand of
the spirit remember my
yearning soul.

Let your song of the spirit
build torches of hope and
kindness to light the path
which others like me will
follow.

Let your beauty and love
awaken hidden gifts and
treasures in my life.

And when all the sheaves
are brought in, let humanity
know that the greatest gift
you gave me was, is and will
ever be the awakening of my
deepest soul for the march
through heaven's gate. All
the way to calvary, you
awakened eternity for my
soul!

Whisper

Ugonna Wachuku

All for: Farah Didi of Maldives!

This new day, there is
heaven's healing in your
heart for the lofty land.
The rainbow begins a trail
to you and to nature with
smiles and caring colours.
Winds glide.
Stars watch
through your
eyes on blue
clouds.

Shadows of the moon beam

depart for a journey to you.
Like birds of spring, you
walk through these flowers
to build new, loving dreams
on the moon's moving mild mind.

Winds glide from your blue,
smiling sea into nature and
my heart. New inspiration
blooms for this eagle soul.
And islands in the sea are
born anew for the people's
well-being and refreshing
wholeness.

Then, on distant islands
where drumbeats echo
hopeful rhythms, you
become a singing and
soulfully uplifting,
flower face. in the
emerging sun of your
land's early dawn.
Hope is born anew.
Life is enriched
with heavenly
bounties for the
journey ahead.

You whisper to the wind
and to me. You empower
dear dreams through hopeless
landscapes. You draw precious
patterns of the healing rainbow
on dark threatening clouds.
And there is
hope and
healing
for the
land
.
.
.

This new day, when the bountiful
rain meets you, you shall be headed
for home and love. There, whispering
winds, nightingales and whistling
pines shall tell you the story
of this healing love unchained
in everyone's heart and mine too.

On fertile farmlands of home
and today, eagles begin to come
home with the hope of hearing
your enriching story:

Just whisper.
Whisper to those
eagles. Whisper
to nature and to
me. And your
bountiful story
will be told.
Just whisper
and the land
will be born
anew with
heavenly
hope and
care in
bounties
of the
early
morning
beauty.

In your caring eyes,
this new day, there
is hope and healing for
the land. Just whisper
and the earth will hear
with heaven's caring
heart
in
you

Author's Notes/Comments:

"Whisper" is dedicated to Farah Didi - this Maldives light of the human spirit and creative essence because she gave us: "she rose among the waves." And surely, this land of her soul will be born anew with heaven's peaceful care beyond the waves!
