When you sit on the shore of the ocean watching the sun paint the morning sky

Your feel the breeze, see the clouds and marvel at the early birds flying by.

If you’re lucky enough to have the time…to linger there a while

you swear…in the silence of the morning…you can hear the planet smile.

You are mesmerized by the ripples in the ocean…at the uniform way they behave

each one is beautiful…

smooth and shiny…

forming one never-ending wave.

And you find yourself watching one wave…

as you’ve done a thousand times before

you follow it on its journey as it rolls upon the shore.

Followed by another,

then another,

then another wave…

it’s a beautiful dance they perform

and you begin to understand how in that multitude of ripples…an ocean can be formed.

And when the tide heads back out to sea…your heart begins to soar

for the ripples, inadvertently, have left their mark upon the shore.

And you think of the problems facing the world today…how difficult is the climb

And you’re reminded the only way to change the world…is one ripple at a time.

And you know when enough people discover this…

and flow together…

even for a little while…

We, too, will leave our mark upon the shore…

and we will hear our planet smile.

Wouldn’t this planet be a wonderful place…starting today…if only

We never let another person ever feel lonely.

If no one ever lived in squalor, in famine or poverty.

If no one ever felt the sting of inhumanity.

If everyone in the world received an education that also taught them how to think

If everyone had access to electricity, and clean water they could drink.

If when something bad happened to us we stopped looking for someone else to blame

If no matter what a person believes in or looks like…we treated everyone the same.

If instead of being separate nations we were a nation or one

If only we felt protected by…instead of afraid of…a person with a gun

If priests didn’t molest girls and boys…that can’t be in God’s plan!

If girls and women didn’t have to worry about being molested by a man.

If everyone had a place to live with windows and a door.

If no one had to worry about health care anymore.

If wars were non existent…if we had clean rivers and skies…

If everyone understood the meaning of compromise…

If we saw the beauty in each person…if we were kind to one another

If we treated everyone across the world as our sister and our brother…

We have the power to change the world…

we have the strength within our hearts…

If only we would take the time…

if only we would start.

How do we stamp out envy and killing and war and hatred

when around us so much has unfurled?

How do we bring back love, acceptance and understanding?

How do we change the world?

The answer may seem simple but it’s also glorious and sublime.

The best way to change the world, my friends…is one person at a time.

That is why as the last year comes to a close and the new one is incoming

I ask myself some questions about the person I’m becoming.

Do I bring joy to those around me? Do I enchant, amuse…beguile?

Have I been generous and giving? Have I made other people smile?

Have I been kind and compassionate? Am I not afraid to cry?

Have I brought joy into the world?…and not to oversimplify

but am I sensitive to the needs of others? Is my advice useful, effective and sound?

Am I someone people turn to? Am I safe to be around?

Have I seen the goodness in others? Do my friends and family think I’m a delight?

Have I been kind to strangers? Have I tried to do what’s right?

Am I accepting of others in this world though they are not at all like me?

Is the person I see in the mirror each morning….the person I want to be?

When I look back on this past year…at 2017 and my essence as a whole…

have I lived with love inside my heart and kindness in my soul?

I try to answer these questions truthfully…as the old year yields to the new…

And once again, in 2018…It seems…I’ve got some work to do.

But I am lucky as a human…with a new year about to be unfurled

there is still time to change myself…

and, perhaps, one day…

change the world.

A Smile And Two Drumsticks

One day a lonely drummer sat up

as in his mind a crazy notion swirled...

“What if, with a smile and these two drumsticks...” he thought,

“I could change the world?”

So he sat upon a street corner

and began to drum a beat.

And, before long, people stopped and smiled...

then began to move their feet.

Suddenly a woman with a guitar

stepped out of the throng,

smiled at the drummer

and began to play along.

Then a woman started singing

in a voice both sweet and strong

and the people who were dancing

began to sing along.

As the music emanated in all directions

people came from everywhere.

They smiled, they sang, they danced, they cheered

they raised their hands up in the air.

And when the song was over

some people shook hands...others kissed...and some embraced.

Everyone left with a spring in their step

and a smile upon their face.

And the drummer..

he also smiled...

after seeing so many people enthralled.

And he was left to wonder if his crazy notion...

was so crazy after all.
