When we gaze up at a starry sky…stars with a variety of names…
the distance between the stars and us…makes all stars look the same.
But that doesn’t stop us from letting out a contented silent sigh
when we marvel at their beauty as they shine across the sky.
Most stars are made of hydrogen and helium…
they form their core…their crust…
with trace amounts of carbon, calcium, nitrogen and iron
which the astronomers and poets call stardust.
It’s interesting to note…even though they spend most of their time
with distant planets …like Jupiter and Mars…
when it comes to our entire universe…we are children of the stars.
Because we are mostly made of stardust
let me astronomically explain:
There is calcium in our bones…iron in our veins
carbon in our souls and nitrogen in our brains.
In fact an astute astronomer might be happy to proclaim…
how we’re are all stars upon this earth…with a variety of names.
Which makes me wonder…
Perhaps there is some meaning…in how we’ve found a way…
to see all the stars as beautiful….when we gaze at them from far away…
Perhaps the problem lies in these human eyes of ours.
Perhaps we look too closely at all the children of the stars.
Perhaps the best way to view us is to take a step back…
to where we don’t see our many differences…in our colors, shapes and names…
far enough away…to where we all look the same….
Far enough so, when we view each other…across this world of ours…
we only see the beauty in all the children of the stars.
I am grateful for the universe…
Thinking about her always makes me smile…
How she’s created everything I see
the trees,
the flowers,
the animals
the oceans
the rivers…
the mountains
as well as you…and me
We begin our walks in the morning when the sky’s still dark…
and with the night sky we feel attuned
but not being astronomers we never know
where the stars and planets will be in relation to the moon.
Of course the fact that the Earth is constantly rotating is the reason why
the moon, the stars and the planets seem to shift in the evening sky.
We have no trouble recognizing certain stars and planets
when the sky is clear.
They show up in the night sky at certain times of year.
This time of year we see Rigel and Betelgeuse
who for centuries in the constellation Orion have dwelt…
It’s easy to know it’s Orion….he’s the hunter with the belt.
Castor and Pollux are also visible with nothing but the naked eye
they’re the twins that let you know your looking at Gemini
Finally Jupiter and Venus are easy to spot…without a celestial chart…
and though they seem quite close together…they are millions of miles apart.
This morning the sky was clear…the moment opportune
for a special heavenly sight courtesy of Jupiter, Pollux…and the moon.
They shifted around overnight…and the result was quite beguiling…
with Pollux and Jupiter as the eyes and the moon as the mouth…
It looked like the Universe was smiling.
Contentment filled our hearts when that smile came into view.
and since a smile is infectious…it made us smile too.
Which gives us hope…
With all the negativity and division
that has overtaken the worst and the best of us…
If the Universe can come together and make something so beautiful…
Perhaps there’s still hope… for the rest of us
