We begin our walks in the morning when the sky’s still dark…
and with the night sky we feel attuned
but not being astronomers we never know
where the stars and planets will be in relation to the moon.
Of course the fact that the Earth is constantly rotating is the reason why
the moon, the stars and the planets seem to shift in the evening sky.
We have no trouble recognizing certain stars and planets
when the sky is clear.
They show up in the night sky at certain times of year.
This time of year we see Rigel and Betelgeuse
who for centuries in the constellation Orion have dwelt…
It’s easy to know it’s Orion….he’s the hunter with the belt.
Castor and Pollux are also visible with nothing but the naked eye
they’re the twins that let you know your looking at Gemini
Finally Jupiter and Venus are easy to spot…without a celestial chart…
and though they seem quite close together…they are millions of miles apart.
This morning the sky was clear…the moment opportune
for a special heavenly sight courtesy of Jupiter, Pollux…and the moon.
They shifted around overnight…and the result was quite beguiling…
with Pollux and Jupiter as the eyes and the moon as the mouth…
It looked like the Universe was smiling.
Contentment filled our hearts when that smile came into view.
and since a smile is infectious…it made us smile too.
Which gives us hope…
With all the negativity and division
that has overtaken the worst and the best of us…
If the Universe can come together and make something so beautiful…
Perhaps there’s still hope… for the rest of us
