"Recent Infinity Sonnet"

by Jeph Johnson

After night has rested through its slumber
I look to the sky, to the stars beyond
In confidence that He has me under
Controlling His universe; I'm so fond
Ruling the nighttime like sun rules the day
In search of a light I am unaware
Ignorant bliss, I don't know what to say
Dark emptiness, I've no more left to share
Like a snake slithers time coiled in a ball
I reach through the basket and poison hits
Getting up faster makes light of my fall
Illuminating venomous clenched fists
Pounding the outcome of deep darkened thought
Recent infinity's yet to be caught

"Life Utopian"

by Jeph Johnson

perhaps the end
is the start
for shattered dreams
and broken hearts
to find a new
purposeful plan
for a life Utopian.
maybe the way
to brighten day
is to pretend night
has gone away
and walk in light
with my eyes closed
in the dark
writing prose and poetry
about the reasons why
my rhymes
climb
high
into the sky.
the more perfect
my ideal becomes
I find, it seems,
I'm farther from
the farthest reach
of her embrace
yet only here
I can see her face
so clear she seems
not as a dream
when my eyes close
is when she's seen.
into depths
so dark and void
epiphany
has been destroyed
while the epitome persists
I go on making
charts and lists
and graph life
scientifically
but nothing seems
specifically pertaining
to me
but her.
I ask questions
I cannot utter
that stand tall
in my mind
as I fall
through space and time.

"Inanimate"

by Jeph Johnson

My inanimate surroundings come to life:
-my pen
-my drink
-the light
-the air
-my blood
-the watch's hand
-the rain
---music?

All alive?

What of the animated and living?
...that air that keeps them alive...

the Hispanic couple who can't decide
the wild dogs panting desperately outside
the sleepy drivers of the trucks passing by
the gypsy moth who keeps buzzing into the light
I might feel inanimate and peaceful
Or I might feel cartoonish and cry
Harmony with the two expands my being
I only wish I could make love to your mind
From here perhaps I can.
From here perhaps I have.

"Night"

by Jeph Johnson

As the sun sets they all debut
   And play a game that's a prelude;
Called waiting for the morning dew.
They start out as a scattered few
And then align to make a new
   Luminescent magnitude.
Brightly they all rendezvous
As the sky turns to black from blue
And so appears a harvest moon
That sets the tides, not just the mood
And who's light beams down into our room.
God's hand is set to introduce
To us a glimpse into nature's clues
   Through daylight's lasting residue
And sultry fragrance of perfume
And other secrets no one knew
Even ones thought of as taboo
Now it seems we've no excuse
So I must give my gratitude
And stop awhile and be with you.
