ONE HOUR AGO

Time and fate are unpredictable as united in life they flow

Take the man and the woman in this story…lets go back an hour ago.

They had a pleasant morning…she had coffee…he…cocoa

as they talked and laughed together…only an hour ago.

When the policeman told him she was gone…he screamed…he hollered NO!

You must be mistaken, he cried…she was here an hour ago.

You must be confused…I’m sure…in fact…I know

you must have the wrong person…we were together an hour ago.

The policeman explained there was an accident…it happened in the snow

she died immediately, the doctor said…about an hour ago.

The policeman stood in silence…as the man swayed to and fro

Thinking how his life was different…only an hour ago.

The policeman’s seen it many times…he never gets use to it though…

How people wish their lives would return to where they were an hour ago…

He sees it on their faces…they instantly lose their glow

when they realize their life will never be the same as it was an hour ago…

It reminds us all to cherish every moment…because we truly never know

when our life will change forever…like theirs did…one hour ago.

LOOKING UP

Looking up at the sky this morning

as clouds and colors fill the air

I have to wonder…

am I looking up at heaven

or already standing there?

A MOMENT IN THE BOOKSTORE

My family came to visit me in the bookstore…where I was working the other night

I greeted them as they came through the door… with a smile broad and bright…

And as they gathered round me…I paused to take a look

and think about how a person’s story…is somewhat like a book.

Each day we add a new chapter, new pages, new paragraphs…new lines

and I was glad on this day…to add their pages into mine.

When they departed…when the door closed…with their visit at an end

my mind wandered to other memories…other pages we have penned.

For isn’t that the beauty of a family…the host of memories we’ve made…

memories we look back on…memories that never fade…

And isn’t that the beauty of a good book…you’re excited to read ahead

but you can stop anytime you want and return to pages you’ve already read.

And you realize this book you’re writing is about much more than just yourself…

and you hope when your final chapter’s written and your book is laid upon the shelf…

when others choose to read it…in a different time…a different place

the memories within its pages…will bring a smile to their face..

IF ONLY

Wouldn’t this planet be a wonderful place…starting today…if only

We never let another person ever feel lonely.

If no one ever lived in squalor, in famine or poverty.

If no one ever felt the sting of inhumanity.

If everyone in the world received an education that also taught them how to think

If everyone had access to electricity, and clean water they could drink.

If when something bad happened to us we stopped looking for someone else to blame

If no matter what a person believes in or looks like…we treated everyone the same.

If instead of being separate nations we were a nation or one

If only we felt protected by…instead of afraid of…a person with a gun

If priests didn’t molest girls and boys…that can’t be in God’s plan!

If girls and women didn’t have to worry about being molested by a man.

If everyone had a place to live with windows and a door.

If no one had to worry about health care anymore.

If wars were non existent…if we had clean rivers and skies…

If everyone understood the meaning of compromise…

If we saw the beauty in each person…if we were kind to one another

If we treated everyone across the world as our sister and our brother…

We have the power to change the world…

we have the strength within our hearts…

If only we would take the time…

if only we would start.

ANOTHER WONDERFUL DAY

Life is made up of wonderful moments….

Little moments that come our way…

that combine with other wonderful moments

to become a wonderful day!

Take yesterday for instance…the moment my feet hit the ground

everywhere I looked…wonderful moments….all around…

Deborah and I took a walk with a friend…early morning before the crowds.

We watched the sun rise over the water…painting colors on the clouds.

When we reached the pier…out in the water….under an ever-changing sky

A dolphin mommy and her baby…happily swimming by.

Deborah made a batch of shortbread for Rick, our nephew,

(as a baker she’s well versed)

Still…no shortbread ever leaves our house

until I taste it first!

We rode in our golf cart to a restaurant

where we met Rick and of a wonderful lunch we partook…

We talked for hours and Rick gave us ‘A Day In The Life Of Marlon Bundo’

 a wonderful Children’s book.

These wonderful moments were but a few

of the ones that came our way.

Wonderful moments that combined together

to make yesterday a wonderful day…

If today we string more wonderful moments together…

I think it becomes quite clear

how one great day will turn into another…

and we’ll end up with a wonderful year…

And if we’re truly lucky,

our wonderful moments will outweigh any sorrowful moments of strife

and one great year will turn into another

and we’ll end up with a wonderful life.

MY EYES

I’ve been blessed with much good fortune in my life

many gifts of which I prize,

but one thing that I have never had

is a healthy pair of eyes…

Oh, I see fine with glasses…with corrected vision as it were,

but once I take them off..my worlds a mass of clouds and blur…

The other day, at Siding Rock I needed my grandchildren as my guide

when I had to take my glasses off if I was going to slide.

So up and down that rock we went…and I enjoyed the blur

even when they got too far ahead of me and I couldn’t tell who they were.

The extent of my misfortune comes to light…in this photo my daughter took

as I stood there with my grandchildren at the side of that fast moving brook.

The photo shows us all waving…and my grandchildren seemed to have no objection

as they waved at their mother taking the picture while I waved in another direction.

Everyone laughed when they saw the photo…as families are wont to do

and I must admit when it was shown to me…I started laughing too…

Even though I didn’t have my glasses on…and I wasn’t sure where their laughter begat…

because to me everyone in the picture was a blur…

and I didn’t know what I was laughing at.

But I’ve never minded having bad eyes…having blurred vision whenever I swam…

It makes for some good family humor and it’s just a part of who I am.

For you see I’ve been lucky to have many gifts in my life

and when, with so much I have been blessed,

it matters not if one of those gifts

Is a little blurrier than the rest.

MOMENTS LIKE THESE

Memories are made in moments and nothing can compare

with the moments friends and family make…with moment that we share…

We treat these moments thoughtfully…knowing times like these are few.

We plan activities we all enjoy…fun and interesting things to do…

We feed bison and watusi….both the old ones and their young.

We happily hold the pellets in our hand while they lick us with their tongues…

On this huge rock in a running stream we slide down together…our hands clasped…

knowing the cold water, when we hit the bottom, we’ll surely make us gasp…

And we do gasp but as our bodies shiver…we smile at each other…and then…

we walk back up to the top of that rock..and we all slide down again.

We take up two tables at a restaurant…for it’s not an easy feat…

finding a place where Deborah and I can eat our vegetables

while the rest of the family eats meat.

For you see we are just as happy inside as we are in the great outdoors…

just as happy playing games around the table

as we are around a campfire making s’mores…

And how I love our planned activities…but I’m also a great fan

of those wonderful unscripted moments…the ones we did not plan.

Like sharing a quiet moment with my granddaughter…for I also feel blessed…

just sitting on a couch in an old bookstore where we stopped to take a rest

Yes…how I love all these moments we share together…

because in life’s endless marathon

I fell lucky to be a part of a moment…any moment with my family and friends

before that moment’ s gone…

WHAT WE LEAVE BEHIND

Her room was filled with a mixture of her family and friends…

Each one came to be with her…as her life was coming to an end…

Each person closed their eyes for a moment…once her soul had been set free.

Each person silently thinking…what this woman meant to me…

A scene that plays out every second around the world…when someone loved departs

There was a tear in every eye…but happiness in our hearts.

I was gathered with them…and though no-one spoke I was aware

How even in the silence of that room…their thoughts floated in the air…

She taught me how to laugh…

She taught me hot how to cry

She taught me how to walk…

She taught me how to fly

She taught me about compassion…

She taught me how to swear…

She taught me about acceptance

She taught me how to share…

And my thoughts joined with the others…

She taught me how to live…

She taught me how to love…

She taught me to forgive…

And I couldn’t help thinking standing there…knowing she was finally gone…

How she may never be here with us again…but what she taught us all lives on.

And how it really does matter how we live our life…

as part of man and womankind…

because the way we live our life each day

is what we leave behind.

BREATHTAKING VIEWS

We live near the ocean and visit the mountains…

both skies…an exquisite shade of blue…

People who look over the water or up at the peaks

remark on the breathtaking views…

It is true…nature provides some breathtaking views

every moment of every day

but daily life has its own wonderful views…

that can also take your breath away?

When you wave to a friend you haven’t seen in a while and they smile back at you

Your partner, children, grandchildren, aunts and uncles…

each one is a breathtaking view.

Random acts of kindness, watching lovers steal a glance

listening to a baby giggle, watching anybody dance.

When people caress…that perfect kiss, when a mother and her baby meet…

watching people holding hands as they walk along the street.

Cookies fresh out of the oven, watching a group of children sing

seeing one person in love accept from another….a simple wedding ring…

Puppies rolling over each other, an intimate dinner for two…

knowing the same sky that is over me is also over you…

Breathtaking views of the oceans and mountains are wonderful

as they happen every day

but these are not the only moments

that can take your breath away…

So look around…. there is so much out there to charm, enchant and woo us…

moments that not only taking our breath away…

but breathe life back into us.
