HOW BIG LITTLE THINGS CAN BE

The older I get the more and more I become aware

that when you stop to look at little things…there’s always magic there.

Yesterday we walked the Appalachian trail…

not the entire trail

no, our walk was incomplete

I estimate we actually walked about three hundred feet.

But in the little bit we hiked much to our surprise

we saw flowers, trees and mushrooms and a host of butterflies.

Once down from the trail we hit the white water…actually we didn’t pick up an oar.

We watched, as other people braved the rapids, from the safety of the shore.

But we climbed on rocks, we skipped stones…and with the river running fast

as the rafters cleared the final hurdle we cheered them when they passed.

We waved at a train, talked to people we didn’t know, felt a cool breeze in our hair, watched insects crawl among the rocks as we were sitting there.

We stopped to have a picnic…picking up hot boiled peanuts along the way.

We drove home the Blue Ridge Parkway…pausing to enjoy the beauty of the day.

When we returned to the cabin…

after a morning where so many little things fell into our laps

We took a little time…and took a little nap.

Later in the evening…seated in our rocking chairs

we watched the sun set and the moon rise…as the sound of crickets filled the air.

And I had to smile as I sat in the rocker thinking of all we happened to see

as I was one again reminded of how big the little things can be.

And how important, it is…after a week like we’ve had in our country,

where sorrow has reigned as king…

in the midst of a sadness so big

to look for happiness in little things.

FOOTPRINTS IN THE LEAVES

It’s been said a million times before…but since we know time can be fleeting

‘Take pleasure in the little things’ is a phrase that’s worth repeating.

As an illustration of this point I offer now to you

a day that was filled with little things…little things…times two.

Two people take a morning walk…leaving two sets of footprints in the leaves

along the way they hear two mockingbirds chirping in the trees.

They pass two people walking…their pace a little slow

what’s slowing down their walk is simple…they have two dogs in tow.

Two sets of smiles quietly exchanged in a beautifully natural setting

Two people pause a moment…for two dogs in need of petting.

Two eagles sitting on a pole…it is their normal place for meeting

Two people stop and wave to them…it is their normal way of greeting.

Two smoothies shared for breakfast keeping two people healthy and alert

Two tuna melts at a cafe for lunch…and two donuts for dessert.

Two people moving silently together…two bodies at Tai Chi

Two people watching TV together…a documentary.

Two people reading in their bed…two people turning out their lights

Two people glad they spent this simple day together…

two kisses…

two good nights.

Two people drifting off to sleep…and as their dreams take wings…

Two smiles on two people’s faces….as they dream of little things

Of donuts, tuna melts, and eagles…of birds chirping in the trees

Of smoothies, dogs and a morning walk leaving footprints in the leaves.

A Good Day

Yesterday was a good day...
I saw the sunrise.
I walked through the morning dew.
I found a penny on the sidewalk.
I watched crows, overhead, as they flew.

I saw hugs and smiles at a wedding
I attended down by the sea.
I found out a friend who has been battling awhile...
is finally cancer free.

I heard a song I love on the radio.
I ate chocolate kisses for a snack.
I waved at a baby I didn’t even know...
who smiled and happily waved back.

I saw the sunset over the water.
I watched a city come alive with light.
I heard from my children and grandchildren.
I kissed my wife goodnight.

Today I awoke to a foggy sunrise
and as I walked through the morning dew
I thought to myself...
You know what?
Today’s looking pretty good too.
