1-800-Need-A-Friend?

1-800-Need-A-Friend?

At the start of school

When you're not cool

When others have fun

And you're all alone

And you can't keep up

With the coolest stuff

And you want to hide

Protect your self and your pride

From those cooler kids

Whose popularity outbids

You and yourself

I'll be on that shelf

Just take me down

Wear me, a crown

I am the temporary friend

I'm there when you cry

I'll help when you sigh

I know all the tricks

Of those popular pricks

And I can lead you, through the high school maze

And help you to your better days

Because I'm just a tool, someone to use

As you navigate through all the jerks and abuse

Just throw me away

When you're done with me, hey

I'm just the temporary friend

And when you're cool

And you have friends who are too

And your friends laugh at a girl

Whose friends always leave her

I want you to laugh

Because it's better this way

You're one of them now

Forget me that day

I'm just the temporary friend

This poem was inspired by my ongoing experience in high school

dedicated to my dear friend Ally, who is one of the few people who didn't just use me as a temporary friend

High School

The cool kid circle is a myth. They struggle with relationships too. Why? It's high school. A preamble to the work place.

Yep. Pretty much.

I agree with you on that. But I made this poem for a friend who believes in the concept of "cool kids", so I wrote it in a way that she would understand (I don't know. That sounds condescending, doesn't it?). Personally, I don't really care what other people think of me, so long as I have at least one, good friend.
