The Oneida Community

The Oneida Community and it's founder, John Humphrey Noys, was an experiment opposite of the Shaker's ideal of a perfect Utopia during the development of the early United States.  The Community believed that chastity wasn't necessary and that sex with multiple partners in the community should be endorsed.  With multiple partners, one can create a perfect gene pool.  The Oneida Community's significance is that this was an attempt or experiment for a radical idea to be acted upon.  It was the product of the Enlightenment.
