FAVORITES

I’ve been blessed to have spent my life with someone who has a host of favorites from which to choose…

Favorite colors, favorite foods, favorite houses...favorite shoes.

Favorite authors, favorite actors, favorite places…favorite things to cook

Favorite music, favorite movies, favorite animals...favorite books.

I used to tease her about having so many favorites…all in affectionate fun

Telling her she had too many favorites and she needed to narrow them to one.

But the more I’ve watched her over the years finding so many favorites as our life has moved along

I’ve come to believe that she is right and I’m the one who’s wrong.

I have come to believe it is she…not me…who is sensible and wise

as she observes the world around us through beautifully innocent eyes.

Reminding me as we travel the road of life, as we somehow muddle through it

It’s not only important what we see, but how we choose to view it.

How wonderful it is for her...how extraordinarily rare

to go through life, to look around….and find favorites everywhere.

Imagine the anticipation...the excitement you’d feel every day

If you know in the morning when you wake up…this could be your favorite day.

Imagine if you were open to it...if you were so inclined

all the miracles you’d discover...all the favorites you might find.

If you can find favorites in the moment...in what that moment has comprised

you will be continually amazed at life and constantly surprised.

You’d fall asleep at night contented, happy, thankful, satisfied,….and then

you’d wake up in the morning and start all over again.

So the next time she picks a favorite...I have no reason to tease or doubt her

because having so many favorite things…

is one of my favorite things about her.

FAVORITE CHAIR

I was moved to smile the other night when I, once again, became aware

How life looks pretty good to me from the comfort of my favorite chair.

And it made me wonder…When did it happen?

For it was subtle…no fanfare…

When did this chair I choose to sit in

became my ‘favorite’ chair?

Deborah and I take a walk each morning,

enjoying the beauty, breathing the air,

We eat our breakfasts side by side

seated in our favorite chairs.

When our children were little we had our routines

filled with laughter, love and care…

bedtime stories, meals around the table

seated in our favorite chairs.

We love when our grandchildren visit…

In our house you could find them there…

on birthdays, holidays, dinners together…

sitting in their favorite chairs.

As we grew older our routines changed.

The entire family can’t always be there

but those of us who can attend

find comfort in our favorite chairs…

There’s something safe about a favorite chair

for no matter where we roam

we know it’s patiently waiting for us

to welcome us back home.

Perhaps that’s why we smile

as we curl into them with ease.

for we realize our favorite chairs

our filled with favorite memories.

Perhaps that’s why I smiled to myself

and I, once again, became aware…

How life looks pretty wonderful

From the comfort of my favorite chair.

FAVORITES

I wrote this poem a few years ago…put together all the rhymes….

With a few updates I’m bringing it back…because it’s a favorite poem of mine.

She has a host of favorites in her life...so many favorites from which to choose

Favorite colors, favorite foods, favorite houses...favorite shoes.

Favorite authors, favorite actors, favorite places...things to cook

Favorite music, favorite movies, favorite animals...favorite books.

I used to kid her because, God love her, she has this quirky knack

of changing favorites so often…I’m often losing track.

But the more I’ve watched her over the years finding favorites all along

The more I think that she is right and it’s me who has been wrong.

As she observes the world around us through wide and innocent eyes.

I have teased her revolving door of favorites but now I see…it’s she who’s wise

For I’m reminded as we travel the road of life, as we somehow muddle through it

It’s not only important what we see, but how we choose to view it.

How wonderful it is for her...how extraordinarily rare

to go through life, to look around…and find favorites everywhere.

Imagine the anticipation...the excitement you would feel along the way

If you know in the morning when you wake up…this could be your favorite day.

Imagine if you were open to it...if you were so inclined

all the miracles you’d discover...all the favorites you might find.

If you can find favorites in the moment...in what that moment has comprised

then you are continually amazed at life…and constantly surprised.

You’d fall asleep at night contented, happy, thankful....and then

You’d wake up in the morning and start all over again.

So the next time she picks a favorite...I have no reason to tease or doubt her

Because having so many favorites…

is one of my favorite things about her.
