[to my Brothers and Sisters who worshipped at the
Baptist Church on Theirway Road, January 9-June 30, 1994]
Those days glowed (like light has its way with air),
before the death of Stephen. Then we scattered
to Caesarea and to Antioch,
not quit recovered from that sudden shock,
and yet not wholly cast off to despair.
Ours is a fellowship of perfect love;
hence, differences between us have not mattered.
These new affections, set on things above,
have made the plainest moments more supernal---
because we have experienced eternal
life. Nor is temporary separation
(as here and now) a cause for consternation.
The Gospel's glorious promise is that, whether
apart or not, we are in Christ together.

Beneath Christ's cross, both priest and pharisee
thought only of self-righteous history;
and laughed to scorn this man from Galilee
Who hung before them. Yet, not in defeat:
His last words---"It is finished!"---made complete
Salvation's great and graceful victory;
and life for us, safe in eternity.
