My Favorite Lie

I know it, I set myself up to fall,

Battered and bruised where I’m fated to land,

Eclipsed by the shade of your mighty wall,

A place I know like the back of my hand.

To whom else can I assign the blame

For the fact that our fates are intertwined?

I signed up for this dangerous game,

The dominoes falling just as designed.

How lucky I can suspend disbelief –

It affords me such sweet relief.

You still haven’t learned not to measure words,

Twisted and halting as they trip off your tongue.

We’re well past the time they should fly like birds,

Unfettered in the face of a night so young.

All you promise need not follow through –

That much I know ‘cause we’ve been there before.

What’s inadvertent need not be true

And always leaves me wanting more.

Steel yourself – you just have to make it to morning light.

Won’t you tell me my favorite lie tonight?
