What Is: "A Human"

Folder:
Three Friends

What forms a person?

A Body, a sack

Of meat, given form

For sake of function.

Moves, breathes,

Exists.

But more.

Body is body.

But what of experience,

Of the realm of thought,

Of the mind, the personality:

The soul?

If the sum of a human

Was simply the shell,

Then what of the Self?

The experinces we have

The things with think

The emotions we feel?

What is it that drives us?

Why do we do what we do,

Say what we say,

Think what we think?

Why is one thing better than another?

Judgements land wherever they may.

The Personality, the Soul, the Mind,

Form the Self.

Three parts of a larger whole.

The Mind governs how

We think, and reason

Gives structure to chaos

Order to the unorderable.

The Soul governs how we

See ourselves

Our inner persona

The person we see in the mirror.

The Personality governs our reactions

Based on the Mind and the Soul.

A stiff yet malleable thing,

Easily seen by all.

But when the Mind despairs

And the Soul is emptied

Due to grief or darker emotions

What is left?

Not Personality or Self

But only the body.

And Body is fleeting.

Where do the thoughts come from then

And who is it that controls them?

The darker soul, the subconscious?

The dead cannot say.

Author's Notes/Comments:

The closer it gets to certain anniversaries, the darker my musings get. Written in remembrance of a friend who is no longer among the living.

    I don't find your poem

I don't find your poem morbid at all. You have many questions to ask, I guess most  of us have asked the same quentions at some time or another, especially in our youth. Loved your poem, your clever perceptions and constant wondering. A good read.

Morose vs Morbidity

I get blue occasionally too and it brings out the questions, not so much anniversaries as just living and being. Like the division - soul, body, personality. Better than Id Ego and Superwhachamcallit. Waxing philisophical asking the life-questions is soooooo healthy and a good exercise because the mind holds the personality inside goodness and the body responds by breathing as long as possible. - Again, thought provoking writing this - Just Bein' Stella
