they say marijuana
smells like burning rope
but why
would you want to burn rope?
Who burns rope?
Is there a job like that?
a rope burner?
Can you imagine a grown man
making a living like that?
I’m a rope burning man
That’s what I do
This doesn’t seem like
something a normal person would do
If you don’t need the rope
you just throw I out
Why would you burn it?
Maybe it’s some secret ritual
It doesn’t seem like something
a secretary or laborer would do
I don’t know
maybe it’s out in the sticks
people out in the boondocks
might be doing it
They don’t have cities to go to
so they burn rope instead
It’s hard for me to imagine
that very many people
would have any reason
to smell burning rope
It’s like this line
that Jesse Jackoon had
down with rope, up with hope
or something like that
I don’t really know
I have too much trouble

I have so many shortcomings
I have so many shortcomings that even an epic poet could not catalogue them all, but it is always uncomfortable to see them reflected in another, and unrelated, poet;s work.
