Lovers Meeting at the Edge of the Black Forest, 1945

Resting gently against cool gray conifer bark

I melt into the forest as if I were a part of her

Quietly awaiting you amidst faceless shadows

And myriads of ghosts that haunt the forest’s edge

Ah, the fragrant smell of pine and fir drifts carelessly

Upon restless air currents meandering up wooded hills

Gorgeous butterflies dance just above dazzling flowers

Careening magnificently over lush valleys and fields

A bird’s lonesome melody suddenly breaks the silence

Filling my heart with a melancholy jubilant yearning
