THE LANGUAGE OF THE EARTH

What if our planet…the mountains, the oceans, the rivers, the trees the animals…the land…has developed its own language…a language we have yet to understand.

What if they communicate with one another…to make right anything that goes wrong?

What if this is the reason they’ve survived on Earth so long.

What if our survival depends on how much we understand…the language of the mountains and the rivers and the land

For what a sad day it will be when the very last human has died…

not because we couldn’t communicate with our planet…

but because we never really tried..

WHEN I WALK IN SILENCE

Once a day I like to walk in silence…not only to concentrate on what I see…but to listen in to what the voices of the Earth are trying to say to me.

There are voices in the trees, in the clouds, in the mountains and the creeks…and if I listen closely in the silence…I can hear those voices speak.

And the more and more I listen to the voices of the sky, the sea, the land…the more of what they’re saying I begin to understand.

I can hear if one animal is happy or another one’s in pain.

By listening to the wind and the clouds…I begin to understand the rain.

Across the sky and hiding in the trees…are many different languages..a myriad of words…after listening in silence to them…I begin to understand the birds.

The rooster who announce it’s time for the sun to rise…the owl and the nightingale who tuck their families in by singing a lullaby.

I’m not sure how it works but a simple walk in silence as the day’s about to start…seems to give the voices of the Earth time to reach into my heart.

Which makes me wonder if this wouldn’t work with people…family and friends we meet along the way…What if we listened more in silence to what they had to say?

What if silent listening to the words of others…once from their lips their words depart makes it easier for their words to find a way into our hearts?

For I believe it’s only when words have been planted in our hearts that they have a chance to grow…why do I believe this…because on a silent walk one morning…

a little birdie told me so.

OUR ONLY CHILD

We’ve shown contempt for our Mother Earth…

We throw garbage on her beach.

Into her air

and land

and sea

our contaminants and pollutants leach.

Yesterday I watched as a beautiful old tree was pushed over to make room for a house…

and then another tree…

and another…

and I had to stop and ask myself…

Is this any way to treat our mother?

Looking at all the times she’s been abused

disrespected

and defiled…

I wonder…

if we should stop thinking of her as our mother…

and think of her as our only child.

WHAT IF

What if the Gods created the most beautiful planet

and filled it with valleys and mountains and trees

with wildflowers that bloom in Spring

with fishes, and birds and bees.

What if they added waterfalls…and ladybugs…an occasional butterfly

and sunrises and sunsets so colorful they kaleidoscope the sky.

And what if once they were finished the Gods were so elated

with the beauty and magnificence of the planet they created

they decided this beauty needed to be experienced to be felt…and thus

what if the Gods created people to enjoy it…what if the Gods created us.

What if the Gods hoped we’d not only appreciate the love and beauty that surround us

but spread that love and beauty to everyone and everything around us.

What if the Gods never dreamed anything bad would happen

What if the Gods were wrong…

What if the people tainted the beauty the Gods created

What if the people could not get along.

And what if now every time the Gods look down on us

every time they realize their mistake…

their tears fall as rain from the heavens

filling our oceans our rivers…our lakes.

What if the Gods created the most beautiful planet

with but one hope…that we’d enjoy it…

What if the Gods created the most beautiful planet…

and all we did…was destroy it.

A WORLD WHERE THERE ARE SQUIRRELS

I want to be surrounded by life…I want to feel alive…

I want to share this Earth with every creature…

as we all endeavor to survive.

I want to live in a world where there are trees…

where the wind makes their leaves shimmy and twirl…

where I can walk in unspoiled splendor and beauty…

in a world where there are squirrels.

I want to enjoy life, like the squirrel,

I want to be, like him, wild and free

I want to take pleasure in the little things

Like finding an acorn just for me.

Like playing tag along the tree trunks

Like climbing high up to the sky…

Like jumping from tree to tree…

pretending I can fly.

I want to treat the Earth like the squirrel treats the Earth

Now wouldn’t that wow and please and astound her?

If I walked softly, took only what I needed

and left her the same or better than I found her.

And I want to live in a world where these lessons are taught

to every boy and girl…

I want them to understand and enhance Earth’s beauty

in a world where there are squirrels…

MORE IMPORTANT THAN WE THINK

As humans we have a tendency to think we’re more important than we are...

More important than the trees, the animals, the rivers or the stars.

More important than the insects…the rocks, the clouds, the air.

We like to think we are superior…to all creations…everywhere.

But stand in a field awash in a midday sun…and try not to be stunned…

As daylight turns to darkness when the moon blocks out the sun.

Or walk amidst the forest in the misty morning dawn

And think how many of these trees will be here long after we’re gone.

Or stand on a mountain top at sunset...or where the ocean meets the sand

And you quickly come to realize...we are but a speck upon the land.

When we think we are more important than the wind, the water…the land

Perhaps we should pause a moment and try to understand…

How the Earth knows, when it comes to importance, we humans are quite small…

and without all these things we think we’re superior to…

we wouldn’t be standing here at all!

FROM A DISTANCE

When viewed from afar…in the darkness of space…it certainly appears

the Earth forms a perfect circle..a beautiful floating sphere.

From this perspective we only see her lands…

her trees, her clouds, her seas…

suggesting the Earth allows all of them…

to exist wherever they please…

Implying the Earth gives equally…

of her air, her sun, her breeze…

From this distance the Earth looks like a unified whole…

We see no immigrants…no refugees.

Yes from far away the Earth is but a swirling mass…

of whites and blues and tans…

There are no borders disconnecting us…

for borders are drawn by man.

Perhaps mankind will one day emulate Earth

and no one will live in fear…

Perhaps one day we’ll have no unwanted souls…

and all will be welcome here.

For then and only then will the Earth truly be

a beautiful floating star…

When she looks the same from close up…

As she does when we look from afar.

ONE EARTH...ONE LOVE

The universe is filled with dark and empty stars and planets…

floating in thin air…

devoid of life and love…

at night…you can see them everywhere.

But Earth was to be different…

We’ve been given life…

We all breathe the same air…

We’ve been given one planet to care for…

one planet we’re meant to share.

And we’ve been given one love…

it floats upon the air…

one love…to bring us all together…

one love…we’re meant to share.

But…

Until we learn to share our Earth…

our love…

with everyone…

everywhere…

We’re just another dark and empty planet…

floating in thin air.
