OUR DREAM HOUSE

As I began my walk this morning…before the streets of the city I roamed…

I turned around and thanked our house…our house we call our home.

Over 30 years ago, when we were married, (that time is much shorter than it seems!)

we were going to build a house…a house that matched our dreams.

This house was to be our first house…that’s what we believed.

We never dreamed this house would be the house we’d never leave.

We were going to build a bungalow…that’s the dream house we designed…

but with children to feed and bills to pay…life had other things in mind.

For 34 years and counting this is the house where we have stayed.

It’s where we watched our children grow…where they laughed and cried and played.

It’s where we watched our grandchildren grow…why we can never move away…

It’s where our family comes together to celebrate holidays.

It’s where we’ve all left memories in any nook or cranny you might comb.

It’s where…along the way…this house became our home.

We never dreamed when we moved in her how quickly 34 years would pass…

never dreamed our first house…would also be our last.

And I stand her thankful we have our dream house…

thankful I’ve changed my point of view….

for now I know our dream house…

any dream house…

is the house where dreams come true.

DREAM HOUSE REVISITED

While looking through an old picture album the other day (Yes! Picture albums still exist) nestled in the seams of one page…we found this old and weathered list.

As we opened it and began to read…the two of us were thrilled…that old list contained the items for the dream house we would build.

At the top of the list…of course…a bungalow was number one…not too big…but with enough room for our children to play and dream and run.

There was no timeline on our dream house list…no specific when…it was just a list of all the things we dreamed about back then.

As I sat there holding that old list of dreams within my hand…I realized we never built our dream house…life didn’t go quite the way we planned.

After we finished reading the list…that together we’d amassed…I gently folded it back up…then turned to Deborah and asked:

“Are you sad we never built our dream house…sad you may have missed…your chance to live in a house with all the items on our list?”

She closed her eyes and visited her memory for a while…before she returned the list to the album…squeezed my hand and smiled.

“How can I be sad.” She said. “Though this is not our bungalow…this is the house we’ve raised three children in…and watched four grandchildren grow.”

“This house contains all the joys we’ve shared…all the sorrows we’ve overcome…this is the house that’s influenced who our children and grandchildren have become.”

“Yes, this list was never completed.” She said. “But it’s not as sad as that may seem…This might not be the dream house from our list…but it is our house of dreams.”

And I felt blessed she reminded me of something we both already knew…

that a dream house can be any house…where all your dreams come true.

DREAM HOUSE

When we were younger and we’d dream…Debrah and I would agree on what size and shape and color…our perfect house would be.

It would be a bungalow with room for our family…and more…the kitchen would be big and modern…there’d be bedrooms on the second floor.

There’d be a huge yard for our children…with a garden that would bloom in Spring…

A porch would stretch the entire length…with rocking chairs…and a swing.

Our first house was not a bungalow…but we felt it’s bones were strong…and we thought it’d be a great place to start…until our dream house came along.

It was a cozy little house with oak trees on the land…but it turns out saving up for our dream house was not as easy as we planned.

We realized quite early…as I’m sure many of you can relate…with children to feed and bills to pay…our dream house would have to wait.

Something was always breaking or there was something else we needed to buy…and so a year…and then another…and then another year went by.

Our children started growing…we were following an old familiar theme……and it seemed the dream house we first dreamed of…would forever remain a dream.

But we grew to love our house and neighborhood…it’s been our home…our haven…our retreat…our children grew up playing in this yard…riding their bikes along this street.

This house has seen us through all our dramas…every comedy…every tragedy…it’s where our children learned to laugh and love…it’s where we built our family.

Life is often unpredictable…for the more we live…the more it seems…happiness is just a matter…of rearranging dreams.

Because now we wouldn’t dream of living in any other house…

but this house…

the house we’ve grown into…

It turns out our dream house wasn’t the house we dreamed about…

It’s the house where our dreams came true.
