OPEN THE EYES OF YOUR HEART

Author's Notes/Comments:

*TAMASHA: It is an Urdu-Hindi word meaning a "show", especially a show

like a juggler's or a con man/woman. It also means a "road-show" where

some swindlers sell fake products at cheaper prices to the poor and gullible

ones, who get caught in the trap of their words and false verbose jargon,

extolling the worth of their products.

* SADHOO: This is originally a Hindi word which has now become a part of

Urdu too. It means a person who is saintly and wise, simple in living and

high in thinking. It also refers to any man who has 'abandoned' the temporal

life of this world.

*MAJNOO, RANJHA, FARHAD AND LAXMAN: As I have several times

before in my previous poems, these are the names of all those men who

gave their everything for their beloved and ended up losing their sanity or

getting killed or imprisoned by their oppressors and enemies.

I keep listening to this sadhoo quite often during my evening strolls in the city

streets of India, especially Calcutta; and even in some remote areas of

Canada, where the poor job-seeking Indians and Pakistanis, Sri Lankans

and Bangladeshis live, sharing apartments. This sadhoo's song is very

profound in its meaning and here I have attempted a translation. It sounds a

lot more nice in the voice of the sadhoo.
