OPEN THE EYES OF YOUR HEART

"What is this world but a "tamasha"*
"A fantasy of just a few days
"At times it's a sweet dream,
"But mostly, just a nightmare,
"Harrowing and very frightening,
"With an unpleasant, fearful ending...
" Ha-ha-ha-ha! Ha-ha-ha-ha!
" Open the eyes of your heart, wise one,
"Open the eyes of your heart...

This was what I heard a sadhoo* singing,
While taking a slow stroll last evening:

"Open the eyes of your heart, wise one,
"Open the eyes of your heart...
"People use us for their own ends,
"And we think they are our friends,
"And when they shrugg off leaving us,
"And we sigh as to why they pretend.
"No one listens to our cries...

"Ha-ha-ha-ha! Ha-ha-ha-ha!"
"Wasn't it all just a 'tamasha'?
"So, please open the eyes of your heart!"

"Every one has their own axe to grind,
"And we get trapped just like the blind,
"Friendship and love and being kind,
"Are bonds that are now far behind,
"So let this sight of me and those like me -- the blind --
"-- Awaken you from slumber, O you observing kind!
"Awake! O my lost friend and become wise...
"Ah, How I wish you could!
"How I wish you could...

"Ha-ha-ha-ha! Ha-ha-ha-ha!!
"Ha-ha-ha-ha! Ha-ha-ha-ha!

"Awake! My dear friend, please wake up,
"Awake! Ere it becomes too late...
"Open the eyes of your heart and mind,
"Dear friend, please open those eyes....
And be not lured by fake promises,
"Or gift your heart to a seducer,
"Be on guard against flatterers,
"Whose very agenda, is your disaster:
"Love and friendship are now like 'fun',
"Used by many to denude you and run:
"So lose not your self trying to become,
"Majnoo, Ranjha and Prirthiviraj, the lonesome...*
When the world showed them at every turn,
Its wolfish, bloodthirsty, devouring fangs
"Making their last days become so gruesome,
"So, don't you too end up like them,
O, you handsome:
"Oh...Just open your real eyes!

"Open the eyes of your heart O friend,
"Open the eyes that can see all..
"Oh, Just open those eyes...
"Ere it becomes too late....
"Awake! Awake! Awake!

"And see the sad truth with those keen eyes,
"The ugliness beneath all lovely disguise,
"Please open those eyes...
"Open the eyes of your heart...O friend,
"Oh, wake up and be wise!"

Author's Notes/Comments:

*TAMASHA: It is an Urdu-Hindi word meaning a "show", especially a show

like a juggler's or a con man/woman. It also means a "road-show" where

some swindlers sell fake products at cheaper prices to the poor and gullible

ones, who get caught in the trap of their words and false verbose jargon,

extolling the worth of their products.

* SADHOO: This is originally a Hindi word which has now become a part of

Urdu too. It means a person who is saintly and wise, simple in living and

high in thinking. It also refers to any man who has 'abandoned' the temporal

life of this world.

*MAJNOO, RANJHA, FARHAD AND LAXMAN: As I have several times

before in my previous poems, these are the names of all those men who

gave their everything for their beloved and ended up losing their sanity or

getting killed or imprisoned by their oppressors and enemies.

I keep listening to this sadhoo quite often during my evening strolls in the city

streets of India, especially Calcutta; and even in some remote areas of

Canada, where the poor job-seeking Indians and Pakistanis, Sri Lankans

and Bangladeshis live, sharing apartments. This sadhoo's song is very

profound in its meaning and here I have attempted a translation. It sounds a

lot more nice in the voice of the sadhoo.
