Richard Cory

Richard Cory’s lungs
Expand and
Collapse and
Expand and
Collapse.
Null and
Void and
Null and
Void.

The ocean within his chest
Recedes and
Advances and
Recedes and
Advances.

The valves to his heart
Open and
Close and
Open and
Close.
Null and
Void and
Null and
Void.

For Richard,
Breathing does not always come with ease.
Each null
and void
and null
and void
Beat to Richard’s heart,
Like sand
Slips through his hands.
Until one day,
Richard Cory went home,
Put a bullet through his head.

Lead bursts through the
Null and
Void and
Null and
--Richard’s chest becomes a waveless ocean.

Intersting Write

I love Simon and Garfunkle - Richard Corey was required reading in high school english - So this poem is about a man who was empty - and had no way to fill himself - the severely depressed as a medical and emotional illness is tragic when it ends in suicide. The invisibllity of the pain is masked and can not be easily uncovered. Good write, great topic ~Star~
