At A Roman Visitor's Homesickness

[after Mark 6: 14-28]

These audit trails take me so far from home,

and local foibles make me yearn for Rome.

King Herod, as a prime example:  can

a ruler really put his better reason

aside to grovel through lust for a season?

He has seduced his brother Philip's wife

and brought her here, pretending married life.

But now he stares a lot at her young daughter---

a gorgeous girl, about thirteen years old.

Herod is quite an ass of the first water.

A local preacher, John, by name, was bold

enough to tell King Herod of his wrong

(against his brother):  I suspect, ere long,

someone will want to kill the holy man.
