That Was Me

You tell me no bright future lies in wait,
That life has passed you by, that it's too late.
You know by now all the world has to teach.
Contentment, you're certain, is out of reach.

Take a look in the mirror - look, and see.
Well, that was me, my child. That was me.

Practice patience and find what you're made of.
At last you will feel that important love
Which keeps discouraging voices at bay
And allows you to dismiss what they say.

Soon your real life will come. Wait and see.
Look in the mirror, love. That was me.

Author's Notes/Comments:

This was written in a rare moment of clarity and self-assurance. I had a sound understanding of how far I had come. I realized how much I had changed, how grim things had once looked and how I had gotten through them. I have a feeling this will be a poem I continue to come back to. I would be very happy if it helped even one person. I often think of the “It Gets Better” campaign when this poem comes to mind. This was written in the spring of 2011 and included on the collection "This Page" released June 10, 2011.
