"Table Dance"

by Jeph Johnson

I dissect them
As she sits across the restaurant
And doesn't remember
Smiling four years earlier
On a moonlit evening
Dancing with me step by step
Now she dances through her meal
With him across the table
Of a dimly-lit Denny's
Without the smile on her lips
That was there when we danced.

Oh, so sweet and melancholy! You hit a home run with this one. Here's a quiet little scene that's bursting with emotion. You make the pain almost visible.
