CLARA BOW

Folder:
JOURNAL # 41

she was
pure sex appeal
in a summer's dress
with a wild scarf in her hair
and bright rouge upon her
cupid's bow mouth
that idyllic face of the 1920's
a clever agency introduced the 'It Girl image
her very own middle march of that genre
more popular than Monroe she was or
even Harlow, West and Gish
a massive box office draw she became
she was a vamp with her string of
lovers even Cooper in tow
whispering her name
and as generous of heart
as she was reported to be profane
smashing old stereotypes
that, she none too graciously did
while shocking her way into people's hearts
it was repeatedly reported
she was sad in private
while vivacious in public
two opposing sides
to a very lovely coin
with flaming red hair
and a face not like previously seen
she not only oozed but positively splashed
her raw sex appeal onto America's movie
screens
her audience ate her up like
the most delicious of chocolate ice cream
she slipped out of Hollywood though
a short 11 years later
in a  hurricane of that era's disgrace
slipping in and out of obscurity
through the weave of the great depression
and the second world war
until she died quietly in her tiny home
in Culver City, California
hiding from the world
and her childhood demons
of neglect, abuse and pain
she no longer had the strength
nor ambition to run from
coming as she did into this world
like a mistreated mouse
that became a majestic lioness
only to die the solitary death
of a harmless hermit crab
what a life Clara
what a life
you could have taken the cards
you were given
and became another link in a
very damaged fence
but instead
onto the road of Hollywood
you took your special brand
of Genius
and gave the world it's first
Goddess to love on celluloid
a Princess on a pea
that you were
and for 60 long years you laid
on that particular mattress
suffering inside
as you wore those happy shoes
and danced beneath a pretty joy
filled space
to think
it was all an elaborate act
the world ate you up
what an actress
you indubitably did
leave your amazing
and unforgettable mark
27 times over in fact.........

Author's Notes/Comments:

For some reason I kept thinking of her name. I knew she was a silent film star and was quirky and cute but other than that I knew nothing. For like 3 days her name has come into my mind. I guess I was meant to write about her cause I finally took the bait and looked up on youtube a BBC documentary and then I read this huge extensive write up about her in Wikipedia and this poem was born of that. She lead quite a life and was a tragic figure too. Anyway, I hope you enjoy my introducing you too to Clara Bow................
