INHERITANCE WASTED

gatherers warn
of the angry winter beast
still yet to come
so brutally hungry this monster
to them seems
to devour the warmth of every living
being
preparations must be made to fend off
the cold edges of death
vegetation carefully selected and stored
egg birds collected, fed and caged
thick animal hides treated and stacked
some 20 carcasses high
supplies pushed farther and farther back
into the safety of the rock lined narrow
cave
firewood tirelessly gathered
water collected and pooled
for such actions was priority one
in ancient times
when prehistoric man
labored for his most basic tools
struggling still under the yoke of his
limited intellect
to rise and thrive among
the larger, more ferocious,
hungrier beasts that roamed the earth
then all around him
hard to conceive in his mind at the time
that 200,000 years later
the planet would be changed and dying
under the weight and abuse of such
species' over population and poor
management of her natural treasures
by none other than his future brother
the barbaric human.............

Author's Notes/Comments: 

Got to thinking about prehistoric man and how different things are now and how humans are over running the planet and destroying other species and using up resources at an astonishing rate and this poem came to me the idea of how it was and now how it has become the good and the bad not just the bad.
