I moved around a lot in my youth. 

I was always new in town. 

And I was never very popular. 
I was usually feeling down. 

It was quite a few years later 

that I'd finally find my crew. 

I never did have a lot of friends 

but at least I found a few. 

Here we go again. 

Things kind of seem all right. 

The world was really dark 

til someone finally shone a light. 

I've taken out my compass

but I don't know what it's pointing towards. 

Oh, cutting cords. 

Sometimes the world went crazy. 

but sometimes it felt sane. 

And whenever I'd lose something 

there'd be something else to gain. 

A connection or two was toxic. 

Strange things were in my past. 

Some things would disappear from me

when I thought that they would last. 

Here we go again. 

Things kind of seem all right. 

The world was really dark

I just shuffled my tarot deck

and I drew the ace of swords. 

Oh, cutting cords. 

There was energy that needed to change

and take a new direction to flow. 

Certain things could stay a while 

but others had to go. 

Firework stands and poetry 

depression and fast food drinks. 

Swimming pools and churches 

movies and skating rinks. 

Here we go again. 

Things kind of seem all right. 

The world was really dark 

til someone finally shone a light. 

I've put away old cassette tapes

and packed up old skateboards. 

Oh, cutting cords. 

Driving so far out of state 

or doing a whole lot more. 

Accusing me of everything. 

When it rains it sure can pour. 

Germany and New Zealand

and the Gulf of Mexico

Wearing your heavy metal gear

or wearing a sombrero. 

Here we go again.

I'd rather be in Norway 

checking out the fjords.

Hotels, lock-ins, Hilton Head,

and talking on the phones. 
Madonna and Simple Minds 

Nirvana and the Rolling Stones. 

I never know where I'm going 

but I know just where I've been.

and no matter how long I survive 

I won't go back again.
