My Father's Office

I have a very specific memory of my father's office. It was a very distinctive experience. I was about 10 years old when I first paid a visit to my father at his work. I don't remember the building, I just remember his office. At that time, my father was working at an accounting firm which name I can't recall. Until this day, I'm amazed of how my father can be a ruthless and loud businessman with the ability to be the most patient and relaxed father. I could tell my father was a really big deal at his firm because his office had the most wonderful view. Without a shadow of a doubt, I can say that my father is my main masculine figure. My father dresses in suit and tie, smokes cigars, drinks whiskey and has an overrated obsession with football. And by football, I mean soccer. The day I visited my father was a beautiful day. When I walked passed the doors, the first thing I recognized was the smell of leather and cigar. And to top it all off, a song of Alejandro Sanz was playing on his cd player. I find it pretty ironic that, in present time, I smoke, I love whiskey and I have willingly loved Alejandro Sanz's voice ever since my visit to his office. So there I was, sitting on his leather couch, watching him shuffle through papers and holding the phone over his left ear. He would yell at the phone and then smile at me. I didn't care much for the person at the end of the line, I just cared he was happy to see me. And of course, there was his famous calculator on top of his desk. My father has had that calculator since he was a little boy. His calculator is an uncontinued rusty black and gold Casio calculator. In retrospective, I think that moment represents a lot of myself. My father and I have a lot in common, we share the same taste in music, we have a lot of similar likes and dislikes, we both have a little of superstition inside of us, we yell (a lot), and most importantly, we love each other. I am my father's daughter. I strive to be half the man he is. Now, I'm a 20-year-old with the hopes of one day having an office of my own and a daughter to impress.
