SHADOW.

I live my life in shadow,

I watch others in the sun.

They look at one another

And they smile and laugh in fun.

I imitate their laughter,

I dance and smile and sing,

But mine are shadow images,

They're not a solid thing.

It's gray here in the shadows

But none can see my pain.

When tears are unavoidable

I say it's just the rain.

It's cold here in the dimness,

I'm dying from it's chill.

Those in the sun don't notice

When I stand here sad and still.

I crave the warmth of sunlight

But I'm chained here in the shade.

I witness all the happiness

As it passes on parade.

I long to join their number

Out in the golden day

But I live my life in shadow

And the years pass on their way.

I know a time is coming

When our chains will be undone;

Then we who live in shadows

Will dance into the sun.

The rays of heat will warm us,

Our tears of joy will flow.

There will be no more shadow

Only sunshine's golden glow.

Author's Notes/Comments:

I wrote this at a time when I was suffering badly from depression.I am out of the shadow now and living in the sunlight.

Wow!

Great writing. Powerful emotional content and flowing rhymes. You remind me, too vividly, of my own trips down that path and out again. Glad you made it too ;-)

Intense poem. A lot of us have to live as shadows to someone or something, but at some point we all must step out from hiding behind things and people. We have to learn not to be the shadow, but the one casting it. It's only fair to be able to live our lives in the spot light instead of always feeling in the outcast of a shadow. Insightful, inspiring, and intense. Great job.

I can truly identify with this poem. Have been in those shadows myself and once you get out you don't ever want to go back there.
This is an exceptional poem and VERY well written and totally describes how depression feels. GREAT WORK !!!!!!

Yes, i totally understand your words.

For me, I could not even watch couples holding hands. I felt as if the world was moving & I was standing still.

Thank you for letting me know that one is never a lonely number, but always falls naturally before the number two.

Eunice,

This poem begins in sorrow and ends in sunny happiness. You did a wonderful job in describing your feelings. I'm glad you are basking in the sunshine of happiness once again.
