Thoughts on Being American

Thank God I live in the home of the brave

And the land of the free,

Where, if I am not happy,

I am not a prisoner, I can leave.

A land built on religious freedom,

Or religion free from.

Through the blood of countless brothers,

The right to pursue happiness,

As long as I don’t trample others.

The right to criticize our governing body

When the job they are doing is shoddy.

I don’t worry, about arrest for saying so,

And with enough votes we can make them go.

This right to be free may be foreign to some,

But why else do all these immigrants come?

America isn’t about the almighty buck.

We are an affluent nation because of god’s grace,

And a whole lot of luck.

By integrating the best on the earth,

Giving them the freedom to dream,

Has increased our net worth.

And their self-esteem.

As a nation we tithe by feeding the hungry tykes,

And clothe the victims when disaster strikes.

Even when at war with an enemy,

We feed, cloth, shelter, and comfort their refugees.

So be proud to be an American

And hold your heads up high.

Be comforted in knowing that if you

Aren’t happy as an American,

You are free to say “Goodbye”.

Author's Notes/Comments:

Why do the people that come to our country try to change it to be like the one they left.  If they have that much conviction, let them lead a revolution in their own country to make it the way they want.  I like mine the way it is.

Good poetry but I feel a kind of chill in the spine. Change is inevitable, our world is not static. No one needs a reminder for a "Goodbye." Feeding clothing; and then insulting? Does that leave space to express gratitude? Humble, is what Christ stress, meek shall see the light! This poetry is an emotional outburst of wonderful patriotism, excellent write. How about the Americans being really Americans without the European touch? I find your later addition of another poem much more rational, clear, reasonable as this highly charged friendly nuke. Cheese my friend, please don't see red. At least for my sake, I mean, for the sake of friendship. You are too sweet to look angry!

thank you. Thank you. I feel better knowing that there are people out in the country who are proud to be American. And dont have to say I'm sorry I live in America.

You said a mouthful, Be proud, be free. if they don't like it let them leave. we have our way of life and it suits us just fine. Very well written and I stand behind this 100%.
Thank you for being so straight forward,
Peace and Love

I completely agree with Katie, although I am not an American. Here it is the same... a lot of foreigners don't intergrate but create their own groups, still talk their own language and expect us to adapt to them...No way.

That is an awesome poem you wrote. It isn't perfect and I am not even going to go there. But you have powerful emotion in that piece of work and it speaks loudly to the reader. I normally don't care for that type of poem (nothing wrong with the poem but they are almost in my icky-sicky category). I particularly like the first verse, it speaks volumes and I like the way you tied it to the last verse. I was reading slow tonight because I am very tired and by taking my time it allowed the impact of what you are saying to sink in. There are so many Americans who feel this way. Thank you for giving them a voice

I like this poem. It captures the reality of being an American and the choices we are able to make. I like the ending a lot. Always keep writing.

And that sums it up...short and sweet..to the point.
One suggestion: Capitalize God.
