Ouch!

The French Carribean - now I have to go research geography - all I got is Haiti where at night the tarantulas come up to roam and terrorize foreigners. Usually, I like a challenge - I msut be getting older faster than I thought. When did the French colonize the carribs? So many questions.

French speaking Carribean Islands:

  • French Republic: Guadeloupe. Martinique. Saint-Barthélemy. Saint Martin. French Guiana.
  • Independent nation(s): Haiti. Dominica* Saint Lucia*

I know absolutely nothing about any of these countries but Haiti. Zilch!

The French colonized the

The French colonized the Caribbean around the same time the English, Spanish and Dutch were running wild.  I've been to Martinique, St Barts, St Martins, Haiti and Saint Lucia.  French Guiana is South America bordering on Suriname in the Northern part of the continent.  Martinique, Guadaloupe, Saint Bart, half of St Martin (the other half is Dutch) and French Guiana are considered part of France.  They use the Euro and vote in French elections.  The Caribbean is a fascinating place with a remarkable history.
