STARING

We stare at things we see

Some of these

we admire.

Others take us by surprise.

Some shock us,

or offend us.

Still more are those that we

simply do not understand.

Staring

is like an art.

We are ashamed of it

yet we still need it.

Author's Notes/Comments:

wrote this one in the summer of 1985.  My notes say I was on a beach so I hope I wasn't too much of an jackass.

So Many Words Describe Staring

Ogling, leering, peering, espying, absorbing, watching, looking . . . extended prose requires the kind of seeing to be infused with the mood of the seer - it took me a while to figure that out "looked" had to be replaced often in the rewrites. Great observation! :D
