End of the Road

When the road is all you have
and your only goal in life
is to find the courage to go on
put one more foot before the other

when all the secrets you sought
have finally been revealed
and the next bend in the road
is only the next bend in the road

when all the gates and doors are shut
and the snarling dog strains on its leash
to tear your roadworn flesh
from your weary bones

when there’s no one waiting for you
wherever it was you started out
so long ago
and no one bats an eyelash
when your name is mentioned
in idle conversation

and should you leave the road
and wander into the wood
never to come back out
never to be seen again

it would not cause even a tiny ripple
to rise and fall on the bleakest pond
on the face of this earth

what will be the tiny nugget of faith
the grain of truth that only you possess
that will save you from tottering
on the brink of dark despair
in your final lonely moments

is it this
that you have not wavered
neither left nor right
that in remaining true to the road
you have remained true to yourself
and to hell with everyone else

Remaining true to oneself, i

Remaining true to oneself, i would find friends in the trees and the animals the are walking their own paths besides me. course I'd have to be wary of certain types of spiders and snakes and of course there's probably big cats to worry about or wolves or bears...depending on where you are. but I'd just try to leave them alone and mind my own business. try not to ,you know, project fear. Hmmm... Maybe it would be scarier than i think.
