Showered with Flowers

Young women laugh around the corner

As I sit where I always am

At the edge of a bitter, lonely dam.

I hold onto the present,

with every flower placed so bland.

I refuse to look up to see

the curious giving hand.

This spare yet power-packed

This spare yet power-packed little beauty is very much like a painting: it tells a story with shrewdly chosen images that blaze deep into the mind and stay there after the last line is read. There's a sense of profound tragedy as the narrator, entrenched in loneliness and focused on the safe and the familiar, fails to accept a potentially life-changing gift of friendship.

Superb.
