The Fairy Ring

Folder:
Fantasy Poems

Their shrieks and laughter fill the air

as they jump and dance in a ring

I feel them tugging, ripping at my hair

as they cavort, cackle and sing.

Naked only but for the flowers

woven carefully into their hair

gone mad within their powers

leading me I know not where

And that one there, I spy her

clothed in a silken gown

her beauty a dead man's lure

the essence of fear unknown

I see the spirit lurking in the wood

he watches the circus without a sound

as I pay my price for doing no good

as I am ruthlessly spun round and round

Caught up in this fairy ring

my blood begins to flow

as they cackle and sing

when weary I sink low

and so my death descends

with the spirit from the wood

no room left for me to pretend

He peers out from 'neath his hood

As I lay now a broken man

his voice reaches my ear

he raises one bony hand

and tells me not to fear

I am to join the fairy ring

my penance for my sin

to cackle, dance and sing

when night begins again.

and the ring has come full circle...

This was inspired by a painting. I only wish I could find the digital image of that painting now.

It was a pleasure reading your poem about fairy, for I'm a lover of fantasy, especially about this theme. I like the beautiful words that you used, and how you portrayed the situation that made wonderful images. Also, the rhyming is lovely. Keep up the great work and take care.
