"New" Old Friend

Back in our younger years we never
thought about where we would be today.
We just took things as they came
and figured everything would be ok.
We never thought we would lose friends
to lost time or violence in the street.
We always thought we would stay a group,
one big family 100% complete.
We never thought of losing contact
because of moving to different places,
Exploring new land, meeting new friends,
Being drawn to new faces.
We never spoke of settling down getting
married or even having kids,
Everyday was just another day
and we kept doing the things we did.
But now that I look back reminiscing
on the days of old.
How much did I sacrifice by putting
all these friendships on hold?
I will never know because lost time
just can't be found,
So I'll try to start a new friendship with
an old friend that I've found.
We can't talk how we use to talk
or play how we use to play.
Can't take school trips like we use to take
or say the things we use to say.
But I can put forth the effort
of being a "new" old friend,
And hopefully with todays technology
we'll never lose contact again.

I enjoyed this poem because it mirrors my own feelings of late about friends long not seen, but never forgotten. I'm hoping to bring many of these people back into my life with the miracles of modern technology.

There are a couple of typos which you may already have noticed: "kelp" and "remenissing."

I know what you mean. I moved from Cali to Washington and I haven't talked to any of my friends in almost a year. Good luck with your new friends though. ~SARAH~

I was looking for a pattern this time when I read this one,
and I found it: Nice job of rhyming every other line.

Personally, I thought it was rather natural for teenagers, or even pre-teens, to think ahead as to what they will be. I find it odd that it has pained you to watch your life change--it is about finding new people, not holding onto the same ones as we grow. However...the rhyming was good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Leon. Loved the poem and I'm happy you found your old friend, but I found out you can hardly ever go back to an OLD friendship. I was gone for many years and then returned to my hometown hoping to renew friendships with old friends. At first it was wonderful. We met a few times for lunch, exchanged a few phone calls and made promises to never lose touch again. That was ten years ago and It's been about nine since I came back. I tried, I really did and did my part, but it seemed we had nothing in common anymore, so I let it go and made new friends.I hope things work out for you and your OLD NEW FRIEND.Hope to find time soon to read more of your work!

I really enjoyed that poem, I feel it embodies what so many of us feel about friends we couldn't live without when we were younger that slip into oblivion because of our own neglect and hectic lives, thanks for putting it into words

This poem is excellent; surperb rhyming and such detailed descriptions so i could actually picture things in my head... and it is a total portrayal of emotions that many people experience; i think sometime in everyones lives they have felt that same way u do... keep writing!

A good way of saying it and feeling it.
Only for those whose shoes pinch
will understand what it is.
It is really very difficult.
You have a done a great job.
Keep it up. Best of luck.

I love this poem so much... Cause it is so true... You never think about that kind of stuff when you are old and it is so easy to lose touch... You move on... you grow up but you seem to always remember old friends even if you don't think of them every minute of the day... So anyway good poem... I loved it...

Much Love

I've lost a lot of friends also. Either through death or through plan old lack of contact. Either way, it's a friend lost which is very sad. But, today's technology makes it easy to make new friends, however, it's just not the same.

Just recently i spoke to an old school friend on the phone. It was so nice to catch up.I thoroughly enjoyed your poem.It made me think of some I knew in my youth who have long since passed out of my life.We touch each other's lives in passing and move on...especially in our modern world where people move around so much more than in the past. It's lovely to meet again.I hope you and your friend enjoy a long association now that you have found each other again.

Smile.. it is the cheapest facelift.

Hi! I enjoyed the message in this poem. We can never have too many friends, and no, we cannot go back in time and re-do things. We can only move forward and hopefully utilize the wisdom we have drawn from those years!

Good write...Keep on writing.

Love the message... some people grow up and out of friendships... I'm glad that I'm not one of those people.
