HAPPY EASTER

In the wee hours of the morning…from a place where dreams abound

while in the midst of a peaceful slumber I was awakened by a sound.

Realizing I was wide awake…and more sleep would have to wait…

I decided to discover the source of the sound…or, at least, investigate.

As I stepped out my front door I was greeted by an early morning breeze

and when I gazed up at the sky I saw stars twinkling through the trees.

The sound had disappeared in fact there was no sound anywhere…

It was one of those perfect moments where only silence filled the air.

The waning moon was attempting to bring a little brightness to the night

as the shifting clouds did their best to keep the picture black and white.

I stood absorbing the silence…captivated by the moment…mesmerized by the view

trying to savor every moment of the moment before bidding this moment adieu.

I am not a religious man…but even I recognized the sign…

that I was in the midst of something spiritual…

something sacred…

something esoteric…and divine.

Perhaps the creators made the sound to wake me up…to open my eyes

to encourage me to enjoy the birth of Easter morning before they asks the sun to rise.

And that is exactly what I did…I never went back to bed…

No…inspired by the morning I wrote this poem instead…

As a way of wishing you all a happy Easter…

as well as a peaceful and glorious day

Oh…and tomorrow

if the creator makes a sound to wake you up..

I suggest…you humbly obey.

CHOCOLATE BUNNIES, EGGS AND JELLYBEANS

As our family gathered for Easter…within a few minutes…in my brain…a memory was jarred…of our children and grandchildren searching for eggs the Easter Bunny had hidden in our yard.

I remember our children with their Easter baskets crammed with that fake grass…colored green…and filled with the eggs we dyed, a chocolate bunny and a rainbow of jelly beans.

But our children are much older now…our youngest grandchild is about to turn 16…and we no longer celebrate with the Easter bunny, baskets or jelly beans.

As I sat there I began to wonder in all the years watching our amazing family growing up…when exactly was it…the moment the Easter Bunny stopped showing up.

Childhood is believing the Easter Bunny will come in the night and hide eggs in the grass, the bushes and the ferns…childhood ends the moment we stop believing the Easter Bunny will return.

It is a subtle transformation one day there are no more eggs to find for we’ve discovered other things…as we leave our childhood behind.

Instead of talking about the Easter bunny…jelly beans…and candies filled with cream…

We talk about their lives…their hopes…their wishes…and their dreams…

This year the conversations had nothing to do with Easter baskets or the goodies they contain…it focused on more important subjects like how they’ll be no Easter in Ukraine.

The question is often asked…which some find odd…some unusual…and some funny…

Does the Easter Bunny outgrow us…or do we outgrow the bunny?

I don’t think it’s either…actually…I think the Easter Bunny’s mission is and always will be to leave behind…a little innocence, hope and wonder in the corners of our minds

And once the bunny realizes her mission is over…once in our minds these ideas have been implanted…she’s off to the next generation of children who need to be enchanted.

Which is why you’ll always see me smiling on Easter…knowing even when our children have all outgrown their teens…there remains within their hearts a place for chocolate bunnies, eggs and jelly beans

And why you’ll find even children my age…on Easter…once that memory has been jarred… searching for an egg or two…that might be hiding in our yard.

A TIME TO BELIEVE

As children we believe in the wonder of the Easter Bunny.

We believe in a giant rabbit…gentle and kind

who as we sleep on Easter Eve leaves eggs on the lawn for us to find.

Eggs of different colors…with different stripes and different bands.

We believe he carries all the eggs for all the children of the world

in one basket…with one hand.

As children we believe in the wonder of Santa Claus.

We believe that somehow, magically, as we sleep on Christmas Eve

underneath our Christmas tree…presents he will leave.

We believe in elves…in reindeer that can fly

we believe Santa has a knack

of fitting all the presents for every child of the world

on one sleigh and in one sack.

As children we believe in the wonder of birthdays.

As we sit with a cake in front of us on a dish

We believe in myths and fairy tales…and the magic of a wish.

We believe that on our birthday…all we have to do

is close our eyes, blow out some candles and our wishes will come true.

Then we grow up and gradually, bit by bit, in a way we don’t even see…

the fantasies of our childhood give way to life’s reality.

And that’s okay…that’s as it should be but as adults we pay a high cost

If, as our fantasies fall by the wayside, our wonder is also lost.

That’s why I still blow out my birthday candles…still with my eyes closed too

for I’ll never stop believing in wishes that come true.

That’s why I still look for presents as Christmas morning dawns

and why I’ll be searching for eggs today hidden somewhere on my lawn.

Because I believe no matter how old we are

it’s the wonders that make us smile…

it’s the wonders that are important

it’s the wonders that makes life worthwhile.

HAPPY EASTER
