She was concerned about her beauty

She was never self-absorbed or vain

but she came home in tears

when another girl called her plain.

Her parents were concerned

they wanted her to understand

so immediately they found a prism

and placed it in her hands..

“The girl who said that was probably unhappy.” They said

Please don’t listen to her…

We have never thought you plain.”

“but even if you were

It’s not how we look on the outside…

you’ll find one day…by most accounts

it’s what’s inside our brain

our heart and what’s inside our soul that counts.”

They held her hands up to the sun

“The way the light bounces off you,” they said

“isn’t important at all.

It’s how the light shines through you

that people will recall.”

“We think you are beautiful!”

Mom said smiling as she touched her daughter’s chin

“But what makes you truly beautiful

is what shines out of you…not in.”

She wears that prism as a necklace today

to remember where beauty comes from…

and to remind herself of the beautiful little girl she was…

and of the beauty she’s become.

How many beautiful moments are in a day?

You’ll find its a staggering amount.

Imagine if you tried to add them up…how quickly you’d lose your count…

And to show what I am talking about..to prove what I’m saying is true

let me take a moment and identify a few.

I get up early every day…before the night has gone

I enjoy the quiet of the morning…I am partial to the dawn.

When I listen in the darkness sometimes I hear animals on the prowl

and before the sun begins to rise I listen to the wind and to the owls.

And though I like to think I’m as quiet as a lamb

somehow the owl must hear me…and keeps asking who I am,

I like to listen to the crickets and on this I am resolute…

once the owls nod off to sleep…the crickets follow suit.

This is followed almost immediately by the chirping of the birds

Imagine every morning!…a concert without words..

The concerto reaches a crescendo as it floats in on the breeze

which is quickly joined by sunbeams as the dance among the trees.

The dancing seems to tire the sunbeams…for they stop and seek relief

and spend the rest of the day at rest…seated on a leaf.

I imagine they are preparing themselves for night fall

for as the sun descends

the sunbeam thanks the leaf for sharing

and begins to dance again.

These are but a few of the day’s beautiful moments

and I hope when the day is done

although I am partial to the morning

I’ve taken advantage of each one.

She paused after looking in the mirror, asking,

“When did I get so old?”

He smiled.

“Every day you’re more alluring, more beautiful.” He consoled.

“No, look at all these wrinkles.” she said

“I’m not that same girl you first met.”

He smiled.

“I shall always be your Romeo…and you…my Juliet.”

“But I was much prettier when I was younger!”

Her voice was strained…distraught.

He smiled,

“You shall always be my Guinevere…and I...your Lancelot.”

“You will always be a work of art and I a connoisseur.”

He smiled and touched her cheek.

“For age may mute the beauty of a painting but that beauty still endures.”

“That is the beauty of love”, he said…

“for when love is in your eyes…”

He smiled

“You will always see the beauty…

age endeavors to disguise.”

While our friend and neighbor is spending a week away

we’ve been sitting her dog Angus…and walking him every day.

He and I awaken early…before the sun comes up

and when he sees me getting ready…he greets me like a pup.

My understanding of beauty is personal…I know what’s beautiful to me

but on our morning walks I’ve come to realize…we see the world differently.

While I find beauty in the moon, in the stars, in how the clouds move in the breeze

Angus finds his beauty in the the grass, in the bushes…in the trees.

Every now and then we pause together…you will find us standing there

enjoying the beauty of the jasmine as its aroma fills the air.

We may linger a moment and listen…to what sounds the morning brings

how the trees will whistle in the wind…how the night owl or mockingbird sings.

And though we briefly share this beauty…the aromas and the sounds

I still find most of my beauty in the heavens…while his is mostly on the ground.

Our relationship is symbiotic…Angus, the dog, and I

for when he stops to sniff the ground…I stop to view the sky.

Perhaps that’s why we’re both excited as we’re heading out the door

anticipating some beauty we’ve not seen or smelled before…

I used to think beauty was in the eye of the beholder…as that old saying goes

but Angus has happily shown me…

 is also in the nose.

She never thought she was beautiful…although she hoped to be…some day…

and then she met a person…who made her feel that way.

Who loves nothing more than to sit together and hold her hand in his.

Who tells her every day…how beautiful she is.

And her self doubt and uncertainty slowly faded away

as she started to feel beautiful…a little more…each day.

And the world around her became more beautiful…and everything seemed blessed

once love helped her discover the beauty she possessed.

As they sat together one day…he whispered in her ear

how everything in life is more beautiful…

more beautiful with her here.

And she thought how magical is love…

as she placed her hand in his…

for helping her discover

how beautiful she is.

All and nothing

What is beauty?

The greatest harm I can cause myself?

Sand, then glue my fingertips

  with plastic?

Unfeeling - unyielding

Let the bleach eat my hair?

Why is the pain of beauty

  enough to bear?

Bitter metal rips the flesh

Look at the injury I can inflict

Why do I hate myself this much?

The stain of beauty is such.

Beautiful I must be

Must destroy natural me.

“Do you know how beautiful you are?” her grandma loved to say

“In fact”, she would continue, “you get more beautiful every day.”

“Grandma,” she said to her one day while feeling a little blue…

“You keep saying that I’m beautiful…but I don’t think it’s true.”

“I look in the mirror and try to see the beauty that you see…

But I don’t see a beautiful girl…all I see…is me.”

“Beauty is a funny thing,” her grandma said “you have to look at it differently…

because a person’s beauty…your true beauty…lies in what other people see.”

If you see the good in others you’ll be pleasantly surprised

They will say, I don’t know what its about her

but she has the most beautiful eyes.

If you speak kind words to others…in all your relationships

They will say, I don’t know what it is about her

but she has the most beautiful lips.

If you listen with respect and honesty

as people express their joys, their hopes, their fears…

They will say, I don’t know what it is about her

but she has the most beautiful ears.

If your touch is kind and gentle wherever it may land

They will say, I don’t know what it is about her

but she has the most beautiful hands.

If your smile makes others happy…even for a little while…

They will say, I don’t know what it is about her

but she has the most beautiful smile.

If you walk knowing you have friends and family who love you…

oh how everyone will talk

They will say, I don’t know what it is about her

but she has the most beautiful walk.

She was thinking of these words at her grandma’s funeral

when so many people came up to her to say…

I don’t know what it was about your grandma

but she got more beautiful every day.
