17,003 Consecutive Pushups: World Record Held By Vegetarian

US Marine Corps Captain Alan Jones of Quantico, Virginia was struck by polio when he was five years old. Now a vegetarian, Alan could be the fittest man on Earth by amassing a record of physical accomplishments unmatched by any human that ever lived. He holds the world record for continuous sit-ups (17,003 times). In a 15-months period, he accomplished possibly the most remarkable array of physical achievements ever attained by a human being:

*

Lifted a 75-pound barbell over his head 1,600 times in 19 hours.

*

Made 3,800 basketball free throws in 12 hours, with 96 pc hit rate.

*

Swam 500 miles in 11 days, down a river to the ocean.

*

Skipped rope 43,000 times in 5 hours.

*

Skipped rope 100,000 times in 23 hours.

*

Swam 68 miles in a swimming pool without a sleeping break.

*

Swam half a mile in zero degree Celsius water without a wet suit.

*

Performed 51,000 sit-ups in 76 hours.

The Question Of Hitler

Peter Singer re Hitler's vegetarianism:

If Hitler had a nose, should I cut off mine?

Hitler though he did not eat flesh got bull testicle shots,

bombed untold millions of animals, provided animal flesh for the Germany

army, yet one of his last acts was to free the animals of the Berlin Zoo

that they be on their own in trying to escape Churchill's civilian bombings.

Hitler was responsible for the deaths

of billions of animals.

Churchill was not a vegetarian but instructed his butler (rather than himself)

to put a ladybug outside.

See yourself in others. Then whom can you hurt? What harm can you do?

Leo Tolstoy: Vegetarianism serves as the criterion by which we know that

the pursuit of moral perfection on the part of humanity is genuine and

sincere.

Francis of Assisi: Animals have the same source as we had. Like us, they

derive the life of thought, will, and love from the Creator.

Plato: The gods created certain kinds of beings to replenish our bodies..

they are the trees and the plants and the seeds.

Rabindranath Tagore: We manage to swallow flesh, only because we do not

think of the cruel and sinful thing we do. If after our pity is aroused,

we persist in throttling our feelings simply in order to join others

in preying upon life, we insult all that is good in us. I've decided

to try a vegetarian diet.

Gretchen Wyler: In December I shall celebrate 20 years of vegetarianism.

Having excluded dead animals from my diet, I feel more alive physically and

spiritually.

Ralph Waldo Emerson: You have just dined and however scrupulously the

slaughterhouse is concealed in a graceful distance of miles, there is

complicity.

Pythagoras: Alas, what wickedness to have one living creature fed by the

death of another.. in the midst of such wealth as Earth, the best of

Mothers, provides.

Porphyry: He who abstains from anything animate.. will be much more careful

not to injure those of his own species.

Alexander Pope: I cannot think it extravagant to imagine that mankind are

no less, in proportion, accountable to the ill use of their dominion

over the lower ranks of beings than for the exercise of tyranny over their

own species. The more extremely the inferior creation is submitted to

our power, the more answerable we must seem for the mismanagement of them.

wow, that's a lot of veggies. Thanks sb11. By any chance do you happen to be a vegetarian, vegan or fruitarian? I'm a fruitarian, and I've never met any others in my entire life. I keep hoping...

Anyway, I thought I'd mention one caution. Even though these people were vegs, many of them were bad people, so it is dangerous to blindly admire them for their diet (just like it's dangerous to blindly disparage all meat-eaters).

Example: Thomas Edison was an animal abuser. He experimented on dogs and cats with his electrical obsessions. He even electrocuted an elephant to death in 1903 to show off his great discovery. He filmed it:

http://imdb.com/title/tt0231523/

True, most vegs I've met are respectable, benevolent folks. But some suck! Cheers.

A fruitarian is someone who

eats the products of trees, vines,

berry bushes, and plants..

the fruit gifts of the plant which

do not involve killing it.

I am an aspiring fruitarian..

I make my salads with avocado

lol, some of my favourite animals are carnivores (wolves, seals & whales) so I won't hold it against you :P

Like sb11 says in the post above, fruitarians are people (or animals) who eat only the products of plants without killing or harming the plant itself.

Fruit = the reproductive offshoot of a plant, so that includes yummy stuff like eggplant, beans, nuts, tomatoes, grains and my favourite... cocoa (chocolate)! So it's not as hard as you think. A lot of people are mostly fruitarian, and they don't even realize it

    Why did you become fruitarian?

Funny story... initially it was only for health reasons. I was suffering from stage 2 hypertension (HIGH blood pressure), and the only way to clean myself out was to go on an extreme juice fast for a week.

Not only did it fix my blood pressure, it fixed everything else that was wrong (headaches, lethargy, depression), so I decided I'd never go back to eating the other stuff.

Only later did I realize that I was helping animals & plants by not eating them. A nice added bonus. And ancient hindus/buddhists say it also leads to clarity of thought and spiritual purity... I haven't quite gotten there yet, but I'm hoping! :P

Total yummsville! Raw avocado rocks. It made my skin all smooth again, and it made my hair grow back (yeah I was in bad shape 6 years ago). Soybean margarine & coconut icecream... I never thought of that, but I'm going to try it now!

Thanks for the links. I think I'll join those groups. There are a lot of questions I still have... like what do fruitarians use for shampoo, etc. It'll be nice to get some fresh ideas.

Best of luck with your fruitarianism. The hardest part is finding good restaurants. And friends who don't make fun of you for eating "horse food" lol

P.S. What made you decide to go fruity? How long have you been at it?

But I could live on them too! In the interim, peanuts are good. I am growing them in our garden, but don't know if they will succeed here in Michigan. It's an experiment!

A circulating joke is that Castro is on a state visit to China, where his hosts present him with a rare elephant. He makes the perfect pet, they say. He's a vegetarian, is extremely intelligent, and will live to be at least 100. Ah, he is such a beautiful gift, but regrettably I cannot accept him, Castro laments. A "lost" gospel, the Essene Gospel of Peace, claims that the Essenes were raw foodists and Fruitarians[6]. The only person claiming to have seen the original manuscript, Edmond Bordeaux Szekely, continues to publish new portions of this text, well after his death in 1979.

Some scholars believe Jesus was an Essene who practiced a mainly fruitarian diet, although this contradicts the mainline Bible (Matthew 15:34-37) and some scholarship on the Essenes. http://groups.msn.com/christianveg

Medieval

* Leonardo DaVinci consumed only plant products, not plants themselves,

if one accepts his Notebooks as an indication. http://fruitarians.blogspot.com

Modern 10

* Mohandas Gandhi was a fruitarian for awhile and then reverted

to lacto fruitarianism, consuming goat milk but not plants, only plant products.

* Sri Yukteswar the guru of Yogananda, author of Autobiography of a Yogi

was a fruitarian and author of The Holy Science, a book with a chapter on frugivorous diet. Dennis Weaver recounted that on the set of Gunsmoke he read that book and became a vegetarian.

* Dick Gregory wrote the book Cooking With Mother Nature For Folks

Who Eat about his odyssey from lacto vegetarianism to fruitarianism. He ran 3000 miles across the US on fruit juice. http://www.dickgregory.com

two books and several articles promoting fruit molecules

as the ideal or orthomolecules.

Fictional

* The K-PAXian in Gene Brewer's K-PAX book series and film.

* The Eloi from HG Wells's The Time Machine.

* One of Hugh Grant's potential love interests in the film Notting Hill

* The evil Medusa Johnson (Gloria Foster; the Oracle in The Matrix Trilogy) in the feature film "Leonard Part Six" also starring Bill Cosby

Many notable advocates of fruitarianism in the past, include Johnny Lovewisdom, Walter Siegmeister/Raymond Bernard, and Viktoras Kulvinskas

* Vitamin B12 While the dairy industry claims that vegans and fruitarians have B12 deficiency, the more alkaline intestinal tracts of those two groups are able to metabolize

B12. Unlike nonvegetarians and dairy vegetarians whose B12 is cyanocobalamin, the B12 of fruitarians and vegans is more efficient, producing more red blood cells per cubic centimeter, giving their blood a more purplish hue.

* Sugar While some criticize fruitarian diet in regards

to sugar, the natural fructose in fruits has monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides, which are time encapsulated energy giving the body an even flow of energy very different from the immediately metabolizable sugar.

Fruits are lower in proteins than many animal products. While

the animal agriculture nutritionists cite this, vegan physicians state that nonvegetarians eat too much protein, that carnivores have five times human kidney size per pound of body weight. http://www.pcrm.org Nuts, seeds, and pulses are notable exceptions. Additionally, some fruitarians restrict their diets to so-called culinary fruits, rejecting nuts, pulses, and "vegetable" fruits (tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, etc.)

FOUR HAZARDS OF THE SEA

For fishes, turtles octopi, whales, clams, lobsters,

all swimming and crawling sea creatures, there

are so many hazards in the sea.

1 There are long line fish nets.. some more than 40

miles long.. choking and suffocating and strangling

and smothering every being pulled in.

Their corrolaries are hooks.

2 There is sonar which has killed so many whales and dolphins

as their ears explode. Sonar disorients nearly every creature

of the sea.

3 There are chemicals.. and other poisons.. and filth

.. human waste, the waste of pig farms from Virginia

and the Carolinas.. female hormones .. from trillions

of factory farm urine..which deform the fish.. and pcb's, arsenic, chromium, and plastic.. tens of thousands

of chemical pollutants choking and poisoning and

  suffocating the fish.

4 There are propellers of boats whcih slice and dice

the sea animals, causing them quickly or slowly to die.

When humans eat the fish, says Dick Gregory, it is like

eating the filter out of a car. They are at the top

of the sea's food chain.

Choking on meat and fish is the 6th major cause of

accidental death.

The eating of fish cadavers is the primary cause

of stomach cancer. The countries with the highest

fish consumption have the most stomach cancer.

The mercury and heavy metals cause brain damage

  and arthritis.

While the list of toxins in the eating of mammals

and birds is longer, and its hazards greater,

fish too have a right to be left alone.

God bless you Walter Matthau for letting fish go in the movies Pete & Tillie

and Grumpier Old Men.. God let no one ever again catch a fish to eat him, to

mount him on the wall, to research on her, or to put her back or any other reason.
