THE NEW RECRUIT

It was a glorious occasion

with an acurate realization

that the new recruit named Rogers

would be playing football for the Dodgers

Now the boy sat quietly and calm

with muscles rippling in each arm

awaiting now his coaches speech

awaiting all the coach could teach

He was a sensitive youth and full of grace

a handsome one, both form and face

who'd won awards so many times

for playing high chool football, very fine

Was way up north at Standish College

and the coach stood with face so full of knowledge

sat down the new recruit just out of school

and gave to him then, all the rules

Now son he sad, with voice so kind

I know you're going to do just fine

for your find teams great defence

depends all upon your skill and common since

We have as fine a foot ball team

as most college's have ever seen

and I know that you will do your part

if you'll just calmly listen to your heart

I'm going to teach you all our play's

you'll learn them all in coming days

the team mates you'll be meeting, all are great

and to win each game here is our fate

You'll practice for hours each day

and learn the game in every way

I don't tell you this to give alarm

but you're a country boy just off the farm

Oh I know farm boys are full of brawn

but they also think highly of their home

so homesick you can never get

for here your mind must surely set

The winning teams here make good money

and dollars make life real sunny

so you can tell your family back at home

that soon you'll be playing in the super dome

Each day you'll go to bed by eight

and never can you stay out late

no girls now, for they will drive you so insane

and you must keep your mind upon the game

You'll eat three good meals a day

for they will keep you strong to play

never snacks and no coke or beer

liver, cheese, and greens is what you'll hear

The boy now set so horror struck

and pondered on his awful luck

and so eyes went searching for a door

for he couldn't stand to hear much more

and the coach, looking out the window cross the field

heard not a word, and thought his plan well sealed

but the recruit, listening to all this with fright

had tiptoed out and vanished in the night
