A SIMPLE TALE

He walked slowly down the isle in church one Sunday morn

with ragged clothes upon his back

and a weary face, sad and forlorn

there was no hat upon his head

the day was chilled

but it didn't matter much for as he looked around

his face with wonder filled

He settled down inside a row of seats

and children scrambled and giggled as they ran

we wondered from where he came and who he was

and some one went to find the preacher then

he sat with head bowed low

and the beard  upon his facet hung to his chest

we watched as bitter tear drops fell

and moistened his old and dusty vest

He held a bible in his calloused hands

it was old and worn and ragged, like the man

and why life had dealt him such a blow

I couldn't understand and I'll probably never know

The organist kept playing soft and low

and the old man's shoulders sagged and shuddered with his sobs

a deacon came and sat beside him

and they talked

and soon we saw the old man give his head a nod

And then an usher came

and soon they took him up in front so he could kneel

and they stayed with him

as he prayed to God

his sins and burdens there to heal

and while the congregation sang one old sweet song

I knew it well, it was "Amazing Grace"

I realized that I was witnessng a miracle

for suddenly a sweet smiled crossed

his old and weathered face

We sang another song, and he begin to also sing

and suddenly we also began to shout

and then we made the rafters ring

then all was quiet,as he turned and started

into speak to us

someone came and brought him up a chair

and he sorta grinned and said

he didn't mean to cause us such a fuss

but he sat

both feet firmly planted on the floor

his hands were trembling and tears ran steadiy from his eys

they brought him a handkerchief and then the preachers wife

sat beside him as he cried

Then with a tilt of his silvery head, he looked up

at our preacher as he came walking through our old church door

and the atmosphere then was suddenly changed

and it was not as it had been before

Our pastor, a young man came

knelt beside the older one and took him by his hnds

we watched in wonder at the scene before us now

for it was wonderous, sweet and strangely grand

They flung they arms aroung each other

and both were weeping loudly so that all could hear

and I realized that these two men

held each other dear

And suddenly a bright light shown

illuminating through the windows there

as both the good Lord smiled upon them both

this loving pair

And after what seemed to me,a long, long time

our pastor rose, still holding  tightly to

the older man

then he faced the congretation

and he said

I know that you don't understand

but I have prayed for, and sought this man

for so many many years

it was a long long time ago, this man preached the word of God

and in this very church

but then he tired with burdens great, and left the fold

but now he's come babk home again, this precious one

I want to introduce you to my Dad

I am his son

And dear friends, please listen now to me

one and all

for it matters not how far we've strayed away

from God

He still patiently waits

for us to call

No matter  how many miles we've flown away

into this world so bleak and cold

When we are ready, He is always there

to welcome us, with arm's outstretched

gently back into His fold
