Autumn of seventy-seven:  on campus, for the

first time---away from home; for the

first time---free of parental restriction:

she, het, part of the freshman class that year,

made the acquaintance of several upperclassmen,

sleeping with several upperclassmen,

with my friendship ring still on her finger.

To my love for her, she could give only the finger.
