Cullen's monograph
on the Whitechapel murders:
I read past midnight;
no whisper of obsession
from parents' unread neighbors.

The Cullen monograph, When London Walked In Terror, was the first book I checked out of the library, and the first book, ever, that I stayed up until nearly the next morning to read.  My parents had a neighbor who, when I was all of the tender age of five, convinced them (although she had no professional training) that I was borderline obsessive, and that any strong interest must be discouraged.  Therefore---astronomy, archaeology, palentology---were all offered to me, from various sources, and either withdrawn or downright stolen by my parents.  They even gave my soapbox derby racer away to a distant cousin because I liked it "a little too much."  By adolescence, two things were beyond their reach:  my profound interest in girls (guaranteed by nature) and my new and exciting love of poetry (guaranteed by silence).
