He Only Takes the Best

God surely works in funny ways,

       Sometimes I really wonder why.

He takes away some special ones,

So many tears we have to cry.

Lost loved ones who are so good and kind,

       People that everyone loves.

Small children and older ones, too,

All leave on wings of the doves.

He chose to take my own grandpa,

He was family but also my best friend.

Then He came for my grandma, too,

They left and my whole world seemed to end.

I often wanted to question God,

To ask Him if this was a test.

But I realize why He takes people like these,

It's because He only chooses to take the best.

Author's Notes/Comments:

I wrote this as a young child when I lost both my grandparents within two months of each other and it seemed so unfair to me at the time.  Now, it's so very clear to me as I've grown older.

Thank you so much for writing that. My grandpa is dying and it's so hard, but this is putting things in perspective for me.
