The Policeman

You greeted me with wrinkled brow

With summer’s sweat a dripping

Your eyes looked like they could have drowned

Your message lacked up-lifting

At first my heart did skip a beat

And then it skipped another

It shrank away and went to sleep

And slowly pulled me under

My ears went deaf as they refused

To be a part of murder one

More pleasant now to be confused

Than have a soul undone

Your lips they moved intensely shaking

I thought they spoke a foreign word

While mine were left in fear and quaking

Better off if I’d not heard

My heart!  My heart!  You broke in twain

I learned of this untimely death

My love!  My loves!  I screamed in vain

Though they no more could draw a breath
