+ 9TH POEMS: A Word From Jacob Leaning On His Staff [Hebrews 11:21]

"At my age, I think I have the right to say---

"to express with sincerest honesty---

"that in old age, not every dawning day

"brings easy living in the fresh sunlight;

"just as, once in a while, each dusk-drawn night

"seems shadowed deeply, more fearfully dark

"if clouds conceal the countless stars from sight.

"But melancholic thoughts quickly dispel

"when common joys---stars, or a grandchild's laugh,

"say---reminds me that, though not fully well,

"I still have life.  So, leaning on my staff,

"I worship God our Lord most gratefully,

"according to Abel's great Liturgy

"that Seth brought with him on his father's ark."
