All the Love Songs

I couldn’t find words to articulate

How I came to join the aggrieved.

I smiled wryly at the hands of fate,

Cynicism at last achieved.

I succumbed to the bitter conclusion

That nothing could ever right the wrongs.

My idealism? Born of delusion,

A fantasy reserved for love songs.

Though innocent faith once held me in good stead

I became convinced it was all in my head.

Is it any wonder I saw you

And couldn’t distinguish that smiling face?

The narrow lens it was filtered through

Made me fail to see it was touched by grace.

I went right back to my familiar ways

Attempting expressions of the bittersweet,

Head buried stubbornly in my malaise,

The love songs I heard beating hasty retreat.

Imagine my surprise as you took my hand

And cranked up the volume on the FM band.

Now I know what it is to turn around

And feel the safety of your arms enfold me.

Your resolution helped me hear the sound,

Understand everything the music told me.

You rescued my heart in the nick of time,

Brought sunny days when I thought they were through.

I’ll entrust it to you for a lifetime

Safe in knowing all the love songs are true.

For that, and for all of the above,

I dedicate them to you my love.
