The Beavers and the Squirrels

Roberto Garza

The world felt like it was coming to an end. Resources were dwindling, some species were slowly perishing and animalkind eyed each other suspiciously; many stopped cooperating with the others and looked out only for their own interests.

The squirrels, who had always dedicated their lives to planting the trees that offered food, shelter, air and beauty discovered that those trees were being destroyed en masse by the beavers. The birds who had once lived in them had flown away in search of new homes; the fruits, flowers and insects that had fed many species were long gone. Without the evaporation from the moist green trees, rain would not fall, the rivers were beginning to run dry and the forest was becoming barren. The leader of the squirrels asked for an urgent meeting with the leaders of the other animals to make them understand the need to work in solidarity and respect the life of the trees or the world would become unsustainable and all would soon be lost. But the beaver said that he only had to worry about his own community and they needed the trees to build walls and fortresses to protect themselves from the other animals. The beaver leader saw profit in making products with trees and selling them to the rest of the beaver community, consumerism was going over the roof.

Soon the beavers had destroyed the whole forest and completely isolated themselves behind their wooden walls and their big wooden houses. There was nothing left to trade, and no one left to trade with. Without the trees there was much heat and no moisture, and the air was thick. The beavers soon perished.

But the squirrels and those who listened and had seen the results of the tree destruction, had left for another part of the world. Now they understood the need to work together to maintain nature´s balance. The squirrels with a lot of effort and hard work, managed to little by little grow new trees and regained hope of a good life. The other animals looked up to the squirrels because they acted rationally and looked for the well being of all of them. While the beavers were remembered for their mistakes and became examples for coming generations about the repercussion of their greediness, mistrust and isolation.

Moral:

  •  Distrust of others can cause isolation .

  •  Hard work will eventually pay off.
