a bittersweet poem

devoid of any answers

twiddling of thumbs

nails bitten and picked

confusion in the shrill

shattered shards of life

scarcely satisfaction

everlasting distraction

a softly weeping halo

surprised not to be dead

dreadfully distraught

This is more than just

This is more than just bittersweet, although the title is so very appropriate.  This poem is haunted---by emotions both experienced and unexperienced; and one of the most succint summaries of what a ghost represents, poetically, is presented in the last two lines.  I have been reading ghost stories since about 1966 (yes, I am ancient), and I have never read a literary definition of a ghost, or a haunting, as precise and moving as those last two lines. And, I am very sure, I will remember those lines any time in the future that I read a ghost story.  This poem is really, really brilliant!
