"Song For Maggie"

by Jeph Johnson

"All I can think about is beer and smoke"
A queer introduction, but it's what Maggie spoke
To me when I asked her for a subject to write
I sit here and watch her stir drinks all night
Turning 'round faster than the spin of that blender
Mixing concoctions, she's one hell-a bartender
One ear to the orders, one ear to the plights
of near-alcoholics, she puts on "polite"
Amidst the patron's "glory" and "splendor"
Mixing concoctions, she's one hell-a bartender
She listens to all of the gossip and banter
All the while coyly becoming "enchanter"
With rhubarbs and quips and an occasional joke
Still all she thinks of is beer and smoke
She takes all the shit the barfly's all flip her
Even from cheapskates who refuse to tip her
Four hour's 'til break, but they only bend her
Mixing concoctions, she's one hell-a bartender
