"Darkness Spoke to Me"

by Jeph Johnson

Darkness spoke to me.
My sense of time betrayed
my reliance on that built-in clock
that sounds inside our pride
and rests beside our minds.
The darkness that I see
spoke too attentively
for my distorted dream
to become illuminated
and intellectually stimulated.
Could I rebel against
the end of reliance,
make gate of burden's fenced
underestimate dependence
or employ great independence
by demonstrating confidence?
